Blockquote Many brain disorders involve mitochondrial alterations, but owing to the lack of suitable tools, the causal role of mitochondrial dysfunction in pathophysiological processes is difficult to establish.
Blockquote Here, we show that a mitochondria-targeted recombinant designer receptor exclusively activated by designer drugs (mitoDREADD-Gs) can acutely trigger intramitochondrial signaling to increase mitochondrial membrane potential and oxygen consumption...Thus, mitoDREADD-Gs enables the establishment of causal relationships between mitochondria and biological or disease-related processes and represents an innovative potential therapeutic approach for disorders associated with mitochondrial impairment.
So not only were they able to establish the cause-and-effect link, but they were also able to create a novel mechanism to activate specific mitochondrial proteins, which is also very cool and useful for future research.

Comment on Colleges have a new worry: ‘Ghost students’—AI powered fraud rings angling to get millions in financial aid in ~life
JurisSpecter This is legit a recurring nightmare for me; that somewhere along my schooling something didn't match up and suddenly my credentials are gone until I need to pay up or retest.Blockquote Ineligible students here means "Math-1324 actually wasn't on your degree plan so it doesn't qualify for financial aid," and when these institutions run audits they catch these mistakes... Two semesters later. Imagine going to school for a year and when it comes time to re-enroll for the fall your school says "Oh, yeah, you owe us five grand for that math you took." Some of those are "You have a .5 GPA," and plenty are "You've taken 120 hours and don't have your associates yet."
This is legit a recurring nightmare for me; that somewhere along my schooling something didn't match up and suddenly my credentials are gone until I need to pay up or retest.

But in the last month, I've:
- Kept things running smooth-ish at work while multiple people took two-week vacations (consecutively, thankfully not overlapping)
- Finished up major work projects
- Found a plumber who replaced my toilet a couple weeks ago and is fixing my shower today
- Hounded the HOA for the code to the hot water heater, so aforementioned plumber can fix my shower
- Got the HOA to agree to pay for maintenance of the plumbing main line if I find a plumber to handle it
- Came back on Tildes!
- Made and went to a ton of doctor's appointments that were long overdue
- Found a decently priced laundry service b/c I can't do laundry at home due to aforementioned plumbing issues
- An incredibly generous friend paid for a professional organizer to come and help with the bedroom!
Things I still need to do (writing this down before it all escapes my head):
- Find the plumbing main line cleanout (because the HOA doesn't know where it is)
- If my plumber can't do the cleanout, find one who can
- Submit the invoice to the HOA for pre-approval
- Schedule the main line cleanout (and have it done)
- Maintain the professional cleaning in the bedroom
- Continue to go through the stuff that the professional cleaner dug up and fine permanent homes for things
So I'm still feeling quite overwhelmed, but after writing everything out here, I can also be happy with the work I've put in so far.

I have a (very) small business where one half provides paid consulting and training to churches and religious groups on preventing, identifying, and addressing domestic violence in their communities and the other half provides free lay-counseling to people having difficulty reconciling their faith beliefs with the domestic violence experiences they've had. (For example, some people are unwilling to leave their abusive partners for religious reasons, and I walk them through what safety and security could look like while also honoring their faith.) I am not a therapist or a member of the clergy- I'm actually a lawyer who works for a pro bono firm. But I wanted something to combine my faith beliefs with the training and work I do for domestic violence survivors, so I took some seminary classes towards that end.
I have an existing website and my own domain, but I've been wanting to update my website for awhile. I get if you may want to prioritize someone who is more active on Tildes, but I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring anyway. Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Thank you for the kind offer, regardless!
If you'd like to know more about what I do before making a decision, please ask!

Spa pedicure baths should be lined with single-use covers and be cleaned between uses.
Other than that, I've found nail places to be SUPER hit and miss. When looking at reviews, also look at the names of the recommended technicians. Most places have one or two technicians that are good, but the other staff might not be as good.

Nuts are what are called "nutrient- rich" foods because, yes, while they can be high in calories for how small they are, those calories "count" because everything in a nut will either give you protein or a type of fat that is considered "heart- healthy."
White bread, on the other hand, is essentially all sugar. These are considered "empty" calories because all it gives you is a short burst of energy, but not other nutrients your body needs.
So 100 calories of nuts is better for you than 100 calories of white bread because even though the calories are the same, you got some nutrition out of the nut.
Additionally, since nuts provide primarily protein instead of sugar, it takes more time for your body to burn through it. Eating nuts as a snack will keep someone sated for longer.
Replacing snacks with nutrient dense foods such as fruit, vegetables, and nuts can make a huge difference.
I've spent 20 hours playing Tiny Bookshop in the last week. It's a cute little management sim where you have a mobile tiny bookshop. There are side quests you can do for each location you visit, and also for some key NPC's. It's fun and quaint, but some users may find it unchallenging. There is also no replayability. That said, I'll probably go for near-100% completion, and I think the # of hours I put into the game will justify the price.
(For games, I determine price "value" based on the price of going to the movies per hour, and the enjoyment of the game vs. going to the average blockbuster.)
