One of the Hugo nominated short stories is one that has stuck with me for months now and as fiction is often how I process my feelings about reality I felt it might be worth sharing. It's not subtle. But for me it speaks to the larger fears and smaller hopes I've had since the threat of overturning Roe became real. (And honestly earlier than that too).

Copying the content note here as well:

Content Note: Sexual Assault, abuse, traumatic miscarriage, psych ward treatment, and suicide.

Posting here despite it being fiction as I think it's really about the fears that many women, non-binary folks and trans-men deal with.

That is an amazing well written story. Thank you. I'm going to share this further. And yes, every advance in freedom must be defended or we will lose it. The struggle never ends.

fantastic read, thank you for posting it.

    Jane does not exist.

Or rather, Jane is several women, and they provide a very specific service to the greater Chicago area. They call themselves the Abortion Counseling Service of Women’s Liberation, but for the purposes of discretion, women in need can call the phone number on their flyer and leave a message for Jane, and Jane will get back to them soon.

the Cool People Who Did Cool Stuff podcast had a great two-part episode about the history of the Jane Collective and similar organizations:

Reading this, I realize that most of the history that really matters to my everyday life I didn't learn at school or is really considered all that important in the great scheme of things.

I agree, I think the big things we do learn "matter" but the voices and topics that are erased always seem to be the more relevant ones. I keep trying to find ways, including fiction, to hear...
