I really detest all this "think of the children" political posturing, and that's all this is. When I was younger it was Tipper Gore against Alice Cooper, Prince, and Twisted Sister. Or various groups (religious and non) opposed to D&D.
What it all boils down to is that these people want to act like they are doing something to "help the children", when all they really want to do is just put themselves in the spotlight.
How about parents be parents and be responsible for their kids?
Should we really compare censoring art because it made Tipper feel bad when she heard about sex in a song to questioning a multinational propaganda outfit that ran internal R&D with the express intent of manipulating users' emotions to show them more ads and establish behavioral addictions?
Parents should be parents, but this is a literal unbeforeseen phenomenon. It's hard to imply critique of anyone for not seeing this coming and standing in the way of the tide of "why don't you just sign up?" from the bulk of society.
Not even really unseen.
This is exactly what got Joe Camel banned. There have ALWAYS been laws about how you can and cannot advertise to children. But enough tech companies did it anyways that they can fund the elections of all the people who should be voting to update the laws.
