I still remember my ICQ number. Even though I only used it from like 2000 to about 2004 for Ultima Online. Signed up as kid/teen to talk with guildmates outside of game and to arrange in-game sales/trades (I mined like a madman in that game).

I've logged in a few times over the years, just to see if I could. The first time, probably sometime in the late 00s, I still had messages waiting for me. I think I last signed-in sometime over the pandemic. But by then, even my contact lists were entirely gone.

To me, it was always a shame that ICQ didn't hold. I thought it was way better than AIM/MSN/Yahoo, since you could use it like email and leave chat messages for people who were offline (especially in the days of dial-up). But I also get that a number wasn't as cool as "xX_JC_Ph03n1X_Xx" to us then kids/teens lol.

I seem to remember that at least 2/3 of them could do that. Though to be fair, they may have added that feature later in response to ICQ.

I don't think I've ever met anyone that used the AOL one. Always makes me think of those random CDs they'd send on the mail.

Oh but there was also Trillium which let you cross message everyone.

Yes, I definitely said Trillian! I'll have to go check it out, but I haven't used any of them since all the individual messengers fell out of fashion

I very briefly used Trillian, but it didn't support the MSN avatar. Then around that time I started university and everyone there used MSN instead if icq so it became a moot point.

I have memories of using ICQ but nothing really extra. I'm kinda surprised it still works today :-) Only to learn it is ceasing to exiat in the future.

Bless ICQ. It never really did much for me, I jumped from Usenet to IRC to MS Messenger. I had it for a while but MSM pretty much killed ICQ in my friend groups. Anyone that was playing black and grey hats stuck to IRC.

These days I'm available via Signal and I do still use IRC for freenode #bash for when I'm truly stuck and need script advice, however, this is dying too. Now it's just asking a bot/AI model.

Whoa. That was a blast from the past. I’ve not thought about ICQ in many years. At one point I was inordinately proud to have AIM MSN and ICQ handles in my email sig.

Now I’m wondering if that was in my hotmail email address.

This is a confusing feeling of “god I’m old” and “whoa I’m in the right community with all these old heads”.

about a decade or so ago I woke up with these numbers in my head. I finally realized that it was my old ICQ number.

I tried to get into my old account, but I didn't know the password, have access to the email, didn't even know the email used, and really had no path to password recovery.

I emailed their support saying that I wanted in but didn't have access to anything and they asked me to name three people in my contact list. I gave off relatively generic first names -- Josh, Christina, Tim -- that was good enough for them.

When I go on, I've got two others who are online, but I don't really want to message them, even though I know I should.

I'm sad to hear this, but also amazed that it's still running.
