I'm not really into "privacy" but I won't have Telegram anywhere near any of my devices.

My husband and I went over to Signal - Its open source and in its own silo - there's not even standard cloud nonsense, you have to setup your own backup to your own cloud solutions (which is really really easy btw, same concept as backing up your phone or WhatsApp, you get to choose where you back it up to, there's instructions online so no worries). It's been great - I even have the same stickers I used in Telegram, thank heaven I don't have to live without my Pusheen Cat stickers❤️🐱

Signal is absolutely perfect for me to talk to the two of my friends who use Signal. For everyone else I just use WhatsApp, which has considerable penetration in the UK market. Basically everyone uses it. I don't care about Meta having my messaging metadata. I draw the line at using a known compromised messenger though.

2-It requires phone number to register, not sure if you add people by their numbers or they can have an ID system after you register, but I’d much rather avoid giving my phone number to as many apps as possible.

I heard accounts are supposed to be a thing but when I tried to install it last time it still asked me for my phone number.

I have a few friends and family using Signal now. It took a while. I do not have Facebook, Snapchat, WhatsApp or anything else. You can reach me by SMS (and I'm not on Apple) or Signal only. As soon as people wanted to include me in a group chat, they just started using Signal. When my mother became ill and everyone needed to communicate more people joined so it was all inclusive.

I often get asked why I don't use WhatsApp when it's E2E. That's simple, it's owned by Meta and it gathers so much meta data about you it's unreal. It does everything from logging location, SSIDs you can connect to, your whole contacts list, the list is pretty endless. They use this data as identifiers for advertising. Who your friends are, what you are doing, etc. Ever wonder why ads are magical and you think your phone is listening to you? This is why.

I'll dig out the Signal Vs Others graphic when I get a chance. Signal is just outright one of the best out there.

On modern versions of android it's easy to limit what WhatsApp can access and when. Don't want to use location or audio/video stuff? Just disable it. Or set it to only while using the app. It's literally just a few clicks. Also I don't care. Oh no I might see an advert for something vaguely related to a thing I like. Doesn't even move the gauge on my "stuff to worry about" meter.

You're the kind of person I'd end up losing touch with because it's too much hassle to run a different messaging app for everyone. I'd be sad about it but I only have a limited amount of time and energy available for keeping up with people.

Also, you won't use an E2E messenger because of "privacy" but you're OK using sms which is cleartext and backdoored at every turn? Seems a little strange. Even I won't touch sms..

After the Cambridge Analytica scandal I think we all have a pretty good idea of just what kind of harm can be done by entities collecting seemingly innocuous data at such a large scale.

One thing I'm not enjoying about the move is viewing media on a PC. Clicking on images does not make them go fullscreen, and videos are absolutely terrible quality. Not looking to go back but I really hope they improve those two aspects.

Thats annoying about the media! I almost exclusively use it on my phone or on my work computer - but i don't want images sent while I'm working to go fullscreen anyway :p

Ah thanks, I did find that site but couldn't see some sets I liked. Unfortunately I've also tried a couple of ways to import that that didn't work. Oh well.

It has absolutely awful search functionality, I had to eventually look for like "cute cat" and scroll a bunch before I found some of my old sticker sets lol. Maybe try again but presume the search is a particularly stupid 5 year old and needs really basic terms? Hah

Even if you don't believe the FSB has a backdoor into Telegram, Signal is still just plain better in every other way.

All communications are encrypted end to end, no exceptions. Telegram does not do this. Chats are not encrypted by default, and turning encryption on has drawbacks, like no group chats.

Signal is absolutely better from the standpoint of privacy and security, but Telegram has a significant leg up over it in terms of UX, smoothness, and flexibility.

This is especially true for the desktop app. Where Telegram on desktop is just as polished as its mobile counterpart, Signal’s desktop app is kinda clunky and feels like an afterthought.

This is almost certainly a significant factor in the difference in the size of their user bases. To someone with no knowledge of what’s going on under the hood, Telegram seems superior.

Around 25 of its 30 most popular channels are news and politics related.

I hope this doesn't derail the conversation, but I never get sentences like these. What do they mean? 26? 24? 24 and a half? If they know, why don't they just say it? If they don't know, why mention it at all? What a strange statement.

    EDIT: Typo.

I interpret it as a couple of them are vague, so it depends on exactly where you draw the line.
