Seeking programmable mouse with top buttons
I am looking for a new mouse that meets the following:
Must have:
- at least 3 (ideally 5+) programmable buttons on the top (not the sides), preferably to the outer edges (of the top), rather than in the middle
- those top buttons should not be right-handed-biased (most that I've seen put more additional buttons beside left click, and fewer near right click)
Nice to have:
- Can be configured with Linux; but I don't mind temporarily using Windows or OSX for initial and a once-in-a-while setup
- not too many buttons on the sides, since I won't be using them, so that would just drive up the price for features I won't use
I am currently using a Logitech G300s (images from DDG). I am very satisfied with it, as it meets all my criteria, but one of my primary mouse buttons is starting to unintentionally double click (on single click). I know that that is a common problem with mice in general, but I don't want to bother with DIY fixing, especially any operation that involves soldering. Prior to that, I used a Roccat Kova (images from DDG) which had only 3 additional buttons on top.
I would just buy another G300s, but it's not in stock any more anywhere that I've looked, presumably due to its age.
I've done a little websearching, and have asked ChatGPT, but everything I've come across either is biased to right-handed users, or doesn't have enough buttons on top. Most options I've seen have many buttons on the sides, but that's not the way I mouse (I move the mouse with the thumb, and ring and pinky fingers).

Not as many buttons on top as you want, but it does have 2 side buttons, is open source, and programmable via qmk. (so can be completely configured in linux.)
That does look interesting. It's almost there... almost. I want more than just 3 extra top buttons, especially at that price. Also, I'm really not sure about the look of this thing, with that unusual surface texture. Thanks for recommending, though. I can see how this fits in a niche in the market.
I dunno where you are, but the G300s seems to be easily available in europe - at least on the Germany Amazon site.
It's even on sale here - https://amzn.eu/d/2NWqOHj
Perhaps there are forwarding services you could use, or if you have someone hereabouts that can ship it over :)
I do happen to know someone in Europe. (I'm in Canada.) I'll think about it, but having to compensate them for shipping will raise the overall cost.
I dunno if it'd be easier, but https://a.co/d/8wxJdOV - says 3 in stock in the US amazon.
Yeah, it depends on if you find any good alternatives locally
Dunno if ebay is an option for you, but I found a new Logitech G300s there for $89.99 USD.
I'd prefer to avoid marketplaces, but I'll consider it if it starts seeming unlikely that I can get something that meets my needs.
I take it you're left handed so the Roccat Leadr didn't make the cut? Seems to be a lot of reddit posts about G300 alternatives, but not a lot of options.
Logitech did this to me with the G600 that they stopped making. I loved the 3rd ring finger button that could double the 20 programmable buttons it already had. I can find similar mice, but they lack that button or the crazy number of buttons. lol
That Roccat Leadr looks just fine. I see nothing on amazon.ca, but I'll search elsewhere, too, see what turns up. Seems to have been released in 2014, which makes it even older than the Roccat Kova I have, released end of 2015.
Ah dang, I saw it on their website's homepage so figured it was still in production. :/.
Edit: I see the issue. I was on an old website that looks like a remnant from before Turtle Beach bought them.
I have two G600s new in box that I bought when they would go on sale for when my main eventually develops enough "Logitech" problems.
I think the last time I bought one was 2022 and I'm still using the original.
Nice, I'll have to remember to do that next time.
I started looking for a replacement last November when the middle button failed me (I now use G17 for it). I got it in early May 2019, so it lasted 5.5 years before something failed. Hopefully the types of mice expand again before the main buttons fail me.
