Best tablets for interactive training?
Hi all,
In light of our recent conversations re quality, I'm sorry that this is more of a "nothing" post. But I trust you all and I think you could give me some good advice. I've tried Googling, but it's hard to find anything I feel is trustworthy.
I'm searching for a few tablets on which I can have employees view training videos and or SCORM training content. I believe all of this will be sourced from web-based companies with mobile platforms built-in. I know very little about tech stuff, so I don't know if a basic tablet would do, or if I need any certain specs.
I believe our wi-fi is good enough to support this. We'll be purchasing 2-8 of these for intermittent trainings.
Needs:
- Cheap-ish
- Durable (We will be buying industrial Otter-box type cases as well)
- Good volume/accessibility (Avg employee age is 52)
- Standard video playback (don't need super hi-def anything)

I have a question that may just be playing devil’s advocate (and may lack a lot of reasoning behind why you chose a tablet based system) but with such a high employment avaerage age, would a computer based system work better?
There would be a larger screen and a mouse is a lot better at multiply dexterity than using your finger for pause play or clicking. You could have actual speakers so they could hear it.
I absolutely agree that a computer would be better, but we don't have the budget or space for a dedicated computer terminal. The computer terminals we do have are on the shop floor and would not be conducive to training.
I think you might need a bit more info in order to determine this. I'm quite out of date (haven't worked in eLearning for a good few years), but I would want to know more about how they're delivered. Are these "mobile platforms" apps made for android/ios, or simply responsive html5 courses in an LMS you can access from a web browser? Or... is the LMS an app? (Basically, operating system could matter.)
I'd also want to make sure that the type of content being delivered and audience is appropriate to a tablet. (But I'm guessing that's going too far back in the decision-making process, and you've already gone over this.)
My instinct is that a basic tablet will do, and the limitations (if any) may come more from things like wifi strength/speed (for videos), which you have covered. But again, I'm trying to remember things from several years ago.
Thanks for the reply! The company we're leaning toward said that they are in the process of developing an app, but as of now, most of their content is "tablet-compatible." So that sounds to me like it's on a browser?
