They also plan to use the data about the order in which you buy things to reconfigure the store to make it harder to find the things you want, so you'll stay in the store longer and walk past...

The company has big ambitions for expanding that experience, with plans for smart shopping lists that automatically update as you scan items, intelligent maps that could guide you through the store to find your next item, and even augmented reality.

They also plan to use the data about the order in which you buy things to reconfigure the store to make it harder to find the things you want, so you'll stay in the store longer and walk past other items you might buy. Also, knowing what you bought last time will make it easier for them to target their spam friendly helpful information about sales offers to suit your interests. Forcing customers to use their app will also allow Sam's Club to send you advertising while you're in the store, and knowing where you are at every moment will allow them to advertise items as you walk past them.

And people say that automation is only about cutting costs! :)

It think there's no better example of how toxically exploitative our current economy is than the egregious extents to which companies feel like they need to collect data on us.
