Matthew Hodgson gave a pretty interesting speech about the history and status of Matrix, as well as its adoption by the government of France a couple weeks ago at FOSDEM 2019. I am really happy to see Matrix reach this important milestone. In my opinion, Matrix is the greatest thing to happen in the space of realtime internet communications since IRC.

Why? What makes IRC clunky? I’ve never really understood what made IRC unusable in the first place.

Is there a way to disable that history, as well? For a number of use cases, ephemeral conversations are a feature, not a bug.

Sure. And I've run clients like that in the past. I've run a network and when folks complained about public logging, I told them that there are plenty of people with private logs. It's only ephemeral from the point of view of someone who doesn't have a log, but from that perspective, it is still ephemeral.

I would love to see Riot/Matrix becoming big. Here in Brazil, WhatsApp is almost like water. Every store, company, business, service, anything, has a WhatsApp tied to it.

Storefronts now show the app symbol with the phone number because it replaced the need for calling.

It's so wrong for an entire country to be so tied to a proprietary closed software like this.

not really. if you were to make a discord comparison, it'd be for discord for free and open source software people, libertarians, and cryptocurrency types, since those are the main people who use it right now. but comparing it to discord is hard even if they look similar now, because riot.im has entirely different ideas in mind than discord does. riot.im intends to allow for decentralized, secure communications, while discord nowadays more resembles a gaming storefront with an extensively developed chat client strapped to its side.

So, yes, they're similar in functionality, but very different ideologically? I'm not sure I needed the political foghorn there.

Matrix sounds great. Turned out, Riot is an implementation of the Matrix protocol, not so much a self-contained app.

What I still don't understand is how federated communities work. How can one communicate across different servers? If you, or anyone, could explain this part to me, I'd be grateful.

I can't wait for mobile app to get redesigned. The dev builds from Jenkins look really good already(fdroid repo, I really hope riot and matrix can become the standard way of communicating online...

All they need now is a marketing department and we can put Slack in the trash where it belongs. \o/

And before you ask, yes there is a dark theme 😎

Matrix is awesome (though it needs optimization improvements..). In terms of clients, seaglass is great for MAC, but for non-mac users, there is really no good client that supports E2EE, sadly.
