The content of this article isn't likely anything new to most people on Tildes but it's interesting that it's being written at all. Reddit has defended /r/the_donald pretty strongly but they also tend to remove communities that attract too much negative media attention. In light of the recent tragedy if Reddit's harbouring of such ideologies in /r/the_donald becomes a big news story we might see what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object.

lol, i admire your optimism, but i think reddit's executives will sooner ritualistically throw themselves off a building than remove one of their most active and engaged subreddits. T_D makes them clicks and potentially shit tons of money. they're not about to give that up just because it's also massively bigoted--because honestly, like half of fucking reddit is too.

Reddit are so odd about the_donald. Spez's "Trump supporters deserve space" argument doesn't hold up because lots of other shitty people don't deserve space on Reddit. To be honest I don't think the advertising revenue argument for keeping it all that convincing either. People say t_d drives a lot of traffic but it has less than a million subs - on that basis even a relatively nichey sub like /r/foodporn is far more valuable - and if advertisers want to reach the right-leaning users of the site there are a number of less rabid political subs from that side of the fence.

Personally I suspect t_d is being used by the security services as a honeypot and reddit are handing over access logs on the regular.

Subscriber counts aren't a good way to measure how active a subreddit is, they mostly just reflect how old the subreddit is and whether it was ever a default subscription. Copy-pasting from a comment of mine on a previous thread:

T_D's activity level is very high. If you look at the subreddit list on the old site, it's ranked by "popular". The exact way that works isn't public, but it's generally believed that it's correlated with the subreddit's activity level. T_D is #3 on that list, only below /r/AskReddit and /r/politics. It's higher than about 10 of the largest and most recognizable subreddits, ones that have 20 million subscribers, and it has fewer than 1 million.

It represents a ton of traffic, and the users that use it also use other subreddits, it's not as though they stay entirely inside T_D. I always see people use that "honeypot" explanation but I've never seen anything even vaguely supporting that. I think it's just wishful thinking.

Edit: as a decent way to compare activity, look at the comments page: https://old.reddit.com/r/The_Donald/comments?limit=100

That page shows 100 comments, and (right now, at least) the last comment on the page was posted less than 5 minutes ago, so they're getting more than 20 comments per minute. If you compare with /r/FoodPorn, their comments page has taken almost 2 hours to fill one page, so T_D's comment activity is almost 25x higher.

Wasn't it Flynt who stated that conservatives bought more copies of Hustler in order to be offended than any other group?

Your analogy with Hustlet is more similar to subs like r/againsthatesubreddits that keep close watch on t_d in order to be outraged

More likely, reddit is afraid of political backlash for removing T_D. Roughly half of Americans are conseratives or in other words, Trump backers. With that many people, it is possible a boycott of that size could actually bring a reddit competitor to the spotlight.

It just doesn't make sense to remove T_D. Liberals/leftists are not going to leave if T_D stays.

That's not what I think they're doing. Given there's a (very small but still non-zero) number of Trump supporters who are happy to go and shoot up mosques or whatever occasionally, and a decent chunk of them who are Russian disinformation agents I'd be amazed if the spooks weren't at least keeping an eye pointed in t_d's direction.

Half of Americans might be conservative but not all of those people are the kind of rabid Trump supporters t_d attracts and a lot of them, being generally older people, aren't on reddit in the first place. You don't need to spend long on /r/news or /r/politics or similar to see reddit leans very much to what America calls "left". I suspect reddit could lose t_d without that much trouble if they wanted to.

Maybe. But at the same time, I don't think the FBI cares that much if someone shoots up a mosque, especially under the current administration. The FBI cooperates closely with the CIA who do the whole Gitmo thing.

Yeah a lot of older conservatives are not on reddit but a lot of older liberals are not on reddit either. Are T_D supporters rabid relative to mainstream Trump supporters? I don't think so. Remember that Trump himself endorses T_D. Even if T_D is more rabid, it is not good optics to the "non-rabid" Trump supporters when such deletion inevitably is published in the news. I feel like reddit overall is pretty center these days. Maybe very slightly to the left.

T_D also has massive engagement though, because the relatively small number of people who do use it are generally extremely active. /r/foodporn might have subs, but its engagement relative to T_D is probably pretty pathetic--and indeed as i recall, T_D is literally one of the most active subreddits on reddit because of its user engagement despite the fact that it's probably not even a twentieth the size of other major activity and engagement drivers like /r/askreddit. that is very appealing to advertisers, even if the underlying community isn't necessarily great.

That's a good point in terms of engagement, but the same (relatively) few people reloading pages isn't necessarily all that valuable to advertisers. The other question is how attractive the denizens of t_d are to marketers in general. Quite a lot of brands wouldn't want that association. I don't know the answer to either question, unfortunately.

That said it is possible that the Trumpets do a lot of clicking on adverts and buying stuff. Clicky and spendy people are worth a LOT.

I can't agree more; Reddit has dug a deep pit for themselves with the_donald. The CEO of Reddit has publicly defended it in the past. Now it is becoming more well-known what a cesspit the_donald is. I hope for the common good they ban it; it won't stop the rise of white supremacy, but it will likely reduce their ranks.
