      Hope someday an open protocol beats Facebook, one step at a time.

      Open protocols beat closed platforms every time.

        Well have to figure out which part of Facebook we want to kill.

        • A homepage for everyone?
        • A way to broadcast your status and thoughts
        • A way to share and display photos
        • A discussion forum
        • A way to crowdsource questions/requests from your friends
        • A way to organize and invite people to parties/events

        We have open protocols that do each of these functions individually, but none of them can leverage having a single portable identity that carries across all the others.

      Though I wish it was easier for people who don't know anything about code to also edit their subreddit feeds. I really wanted to do this myself but I don't know the first thing about a json file.

        A json file is essentially a collection of key-value pairs. They are used to render information on the webpage.

        For eg,

        {
            "username": "xyz",
            "post_title": "random title here"
        }

        is a json.

        What reddit and other sites do is use this structured information to render on webpages and for performing various other operations. They can either be accessed through the site's api or just by scraping it.

    I can't use Twitter. I want to use it for following local events, but whatever they do with the timeline, their layout, and the weird habits of Twitter users combine to make it incomprehensible to me. Every now and then I go to it and end up not understanding anything, and closing it after a couple minutes of confusion. Where was I last time, what is new, what is before/after what, ugh. Luckily I found a couple magazines that I follow via RSS.

    It is designed so that you find some random rabbit hole and jump into it, and that keeps you engaged, then rinse & repeat. But if you are there for announcements, not easy at all. Maybe I am too OOTL tho.

      I can't use it 'cause I can't register. Instead, I memorize the @-names of the users I like to follow. If I have a pithy thought of fewer than two paragraphs, I keep it to myself.

      Feedbin is a web-based reader that lets you follow twitter accounts (but requires paid subscription to use the service in the first place, and also requires you to link a twitter account for twitter following functionality).

      Personally, I self-host RSS-Bridge. It's an open source project that lets you generate feeds from various websites.

      I'm in the same boat never had a need with Twitter, after Google Reader was discarded i jumped to Feedly and later added IFTTT bot to my arsenal.

    I've been using RRS to keep up with standalone webcomic websites for a year now, and honestly I really like it, but I would need to add more to it for it to soley be my socail feed.
