It does seem like a very interesting device though so I hope they can work out the problems. I actually like the design of the thing.

That protective film is crazy and it doesn't make sense to me. According to a video by CNBC, Samsung says it's a screen protector like it's supposed to help prevent scratches on the screen. But why would they put a screen protector that cannot be removed without breaking the phone? Why not just use a thicker plastic on the screen to begin with?

This whole breaking screen fiasco stinks of the "brought down by their own hubris" trope. The design has the screen flexing to too extreme a degree, which is probably why it has the extra plastic layer, which I would venture to guess is a bodge fix. We just have to wait and see if other flexible screen phones have similar problems.

The "protective film" is basically a polymer layer over the display panel. If the OLED panel was directly exposed, it would be extremely delicate and probably break very fast, so they put a layer over it. That's why the few reviewers who removed the film had their display break soon after.

This film is plastic (and needs to be; because it's a foldable screen), so obviously it scratches easily. I believe this is why they call it a "protective" film, because it can be replaced if damaged - but this needs to be done with the proper tools and in the proper environment (i.e. by Samsung), not peeled off by the user.

Even if the protector can be removed and replaced at the factory, that really doesn't forgive the fact that it's not the full size of the screen and preferably under some sort of bezel. As it is, I can imagine wear and tear eventually loosening and then removing the protective layer.

Agreed, the protector should have been integrated better, as it looks like even if the user doesn't try to remove it dust/particles will still build up on the edges of it.
