I think his point is that dbrand doesn't currently offer any skins that exactly match the color of the top of the laptop or are transparent. I was super interested in the author's post and was thinking about trying to DIY a version of it, and I looked at dbrand; however, I passed on their offerings because they all pretty radically change the look of the laptop.

Is the author even aware of dbrand or any of the other laptop skin makers out there? I had assumed not, because they framed this blog post as if using a vinyl wrapper on a laptop is a brand new idea they just came up with on their own, which is precisely why I mentioned that there are already a decent amount of companies that offer them.
But fair enough, all the dbrand skins do change the look of the laptop, and AFAIK none of the other major laptop skin companies (e.g. skinit, decalgirl, etc) offer a perfectly colour matched one either. So regardless, this is still a bit of a unique offering.
To be honest, it's very possible that he really is unaware. It'd be interesting to see if he manages to make a decent business out of this and/or if dbrand or anyone else muscle in on the area...

Personally, I'm just gonna DIY my own version of it with some 3M vinyl and an Xacto knife. Getting my hands on the vinyl looks to be a bit of a pain since 3M only sells in bulk, however there are car wrap shops around me that I'm betting will be willing to sell me a few square feet.

Hey both, I’m the guy behind the post and the Kickstarter campaign. Just to answer your suspicions, I was aware of companies like dbrand before I started - I even looked into them to see if I could ‘print’ the look of aluminium but figured it wouldn’t look right - too ‘flat’ I suspect.
I did however get an offer from one company to work with them to try and produce something similar, so if the Kickstarter doesn’t get funded (which I suspect it won’t..) I’ll try and look at some alternatives.
Worst case scenario I’ll just try and detail my steps, point out the exact 3M vinyl etc. for other to try and give it a go themselves.

Not sure if anyone will be interested, but the author of this post did end up creating a Kickstarter for the product.

Hey, didn't realize you were a user on here! Thanks for the information. Loved your post, here's hoping the Kickstarter gets fully funded.
