i am so blessed to be one of the probably-not-many people who is (and remains) aware of the blog that the dude in this article cites as the ultimate inspiration for this article, which is the literally-impossible-to-take-seriously and also mildly fucking insane my nationalist pony. it is truly a blog for the ages, folks (and probably the best case for why we need to enact a policy of unironic posadism).

I think it's a little less clear than you're making it sound. Discord's effectively open in that people can just put up a Discord link for "join our server" with no barrier at all. Because it's that easy, a ton of communities now use Discord as something like an ephemeral forum (which could describe 4chan too), for general conversation and sharing memes/links/etc.
I agree it's not really fair to compare or connect it directly to 4chan, but it's also not really comparable to something like Hangouts either. Getting into a Hangouts group requires being directly invited by someone already in it, and it also doesn't have all the organizational capabilities like Discord does to give servers a bunch of different rooms and so on. It can't be used by anything except a fairly small or mostly-inactive group.
Discord has similarities to various previous platforms, but it's fairly unique overall and definitely is being used by a lot of the extremist groups (and tons of non-extremist groups as well, of course). They're having a lot of issues trying to figure out ways to deal with all the awful content being spread through their platform.
If anything, I'd probably say that Reddit might be the best comparison for Discord. People already have an account on the overall platform, and anyone can set up a new server/subreddit that others can easily join, and offshoots and replacements happen often. Discord's a little more private than Reddit since there's no way to browse a server without actually joining it, but there are quite a few similarities overall.

There's a LGBT discord and a leftie discord for every alt-right discord and they mutually hate each other.
