I know this is a very old topic I am replying to, but I went to post this same article and found it was already post here. Decided to resurrect this post instead of reposting.

I think with the recent Reddit announcements this article may resonate with a lot of new users, especially those who are looking for something that reminds them of the "old days" of the internet.

Not complaining though, it is a really good article. And there are a few more articles probably worth resurfacing for all the new people too, like On a technicality, If your website's full of assholes, it's your fault, and Haunted by Data.

I would very like to have a tag here where we can post a "what small site or a non commercial site have you discovered today"

Where we post links of a mom and pops style site maintained by real people. Or personal blogs. Those are the things i miss. People sharing their hobbies and passion to tge world and seeing how excited they are.

You could always make a new topic for that here in ~tech. And if you make a new topic for the same thing every few weeks or every month, and they turn out to be super popular, it could even be turned into one of the automatically scheduled recurring topics on the site. That's how we got all those other scheduled topics.

I would certainly be willing to contribute to such topics whenever I found a new site worth sharing.

Also, welcome back to Tildes. ;)

I actually ran a website for a short bit that promoted non commercial websites. I missed that time when people would build their own little sites to share information with each other so I set up a monthly micro scholarship thing to give beer/snacks money to indie web developers.

It seemed pretty popular for a few months, even got some folks donating money so that we could increase the amount of awards handed out each month. Started building an email list for a newsletter shortly before I ran out of steam and spun the experiment down.

Took a lot of self advertising to keep people engaged every month, though. Only lasted a few months, but all the pieces are there to spin it up again relatively quickly.

Just echoing what @cfabbro said. You should start a thread in ~tech for people to post their favorite sites. Based on the response, maybe it can turn into a recurring thread. Make sure to tag it...

Thanks for bumping this. This definitely does resonate with me and it makes me miss the days of stumbling around the web finding all the silly sites people created and just getting lost down the rabbit hole. It's encouraging to see that the small web is still evolving in some form and I'm inspired to dig a little deeper than page 1 of Google.

I just read this article and it explains a lot of what I love about the small-and-growing network of little personal sites I visit regularly. Tildes is sort of in this space, since it's non-commercial, even though it's an aggregator. But I'm also thinking about pubnixes, Gemini, Gopher, and the other stuff like that, too.

I love these tiny quality non commercial sites. I agree that this is a big part of what makes Tildes great. This article was pretty inspiring - I might make myself a small website for blogging on Neocities. Neocities looks so good compared to all the bad free static website hosts I used in the past. No ads, the site is fully open sourced - looks pretty good!

You don't have to use a static site host to have a website. You know that, right? You can write your own site and get some regular hosting to share it with the world.

100% true! In fact I'm thinking about switching my Nearly Free Speech (which isn't static, but only does PHP -or- other servers) with Digital Ocean or something for more flexibility.

Of course! But most of the time you have to pay for that haha, which isn't that much of a problem but I would love to have the site stay up for as long as possible. Which is much easier when it's a free static site. The one time I didn't have a static site, I had it up for just 2 months, just because basically no one (except me) was using it and I didn't want to pay for that :).

You totally should, and then tell me about it! (I just realized I want to do a thread on people's personal websites too -- though there probably is one, haha.)

It started off promising more than it delivered. At its core, the article is a showcase of how the Web used to be, with a sprinke of author's thoughts on why it should be that way.

You know, that's a good point! I found some good pages from it though -- I especially like wiby.me.
