I'm glad that civilized countries are standing up to this bullshit. I've only had two conversations with people in meatspace about this issue and I'm already exhausted with having to explain why this is a bad thing. It's like having to explain why being being run over by a car is painful. It seems so obvious to me, but it's just a scenario they could never imagine.

Everyone gives the same pants-on-head-retarded answer too, "Well, just make a different account for your Oculus, problem solved!" Yeah, except that Facebook will remove your account for not sharing enough data. Which means your "oculus account" ostensibly becomes your "new" Facebook account if you want to keep it active enough to continue using the hardware. The fact that this is a practical solution to some people is simultaneously baffling and alarming.

I should say, I don't really denigrate anyone for choosing to use Facebook, despite the damage I believe the company causes to society and intelligent discourse. It's really only the people I know that have never used any other kind of VR and claim that "Oculus is the future of VR" (I've had this unironically said to me already, it was pretty painful) that are so annoying. I wish the Index was more popular.

There was another thread here recently talking about the quest. And funny enough, literally the last thing I thought about before opening tildes just now was about the quest and whether I am just handicapping myself by not getting one ( I am currently developing a VR App on a borrowed vive). I think there's a few layers to this:
First of all "Oculus is the future of VR" -> The huge advantage Oculus brings you compared to other headsets is that it is able to be used without needing a beefy PC. There is to my knowledge no real competitor at the moment. This fact alone could sadly fulfill the prophecy. And until any competitor appears, I can see Oculus winning this.
If you look at the Marketshare, Sony is leading ( again a cheaper headset and all you need is a ps4) and Oculus is second. However, these 2 don't really compete since they cover completely different markets. Zuckerberg said in an interview wants to use VR for connecting people as opposed to just using it for gaming, and I feel like facebook has the funds to push their devices to the masses.

I wish the Index was more popular.

Look at the cost of the index ( 1000 Euro including base stations and controllers) + the cost of a pc with the minimum specs and compare it to a oculus quest. I personally love playing in VR and I have developed a couple of VR Applications and I still find it hard to justify that cost to myself

I wish Oculus was an independent company of facebook. Especially since the Quest will be the headset a majority of your users will use if you're a developer. The business Version is also so expensive ($1000+180 per year) that for most users there is no real incentive to get that one

Honestly, you’ve got the ideas that lead me to believe that ultimately Facebook-owned oculus is going to be bad for VR as a whole. I mean, just look at how inexpensive the quest 2 is. I can’t buy an iPhone that cheap. Why is it so inexpensive when it is so much more involved and complex to manufacture? Easy: they are selling it at a loss. They are trying to become so inexpensive and easy to use that they become the default VR solution. In other words they are trying to monopolize VR.

As far as marketshare, I don't doubt that Facebook has the money to throw around at winning that particular fight. It's funny that you lament Oculus not being an independent company, when that's precisely how they started. After raising a bunch of money through Kickstarter to fund a few dev kits, Palmer Luckey sold the company to Facebook for 2 billion USD before the 2nd dev kit even fully shipped. This didn't even happen all that long ago, (6 years I think?) and yet almost nobody seems to remember that Oculus was, at one point, not related to Facebook at all. Until Facebook decided to throw their financial weight around and get a foothold into the industry. Even at that point, it was pretty widely speculated that Facebook would abandon gaming and go after the "virtual experiences" market, such as being able to visit a virtual cinema with avatars of your friends and whatever. Seriously, I'm not trying to say that Facebook can't win the majority of market share here, merely lamenting that fact. Which, is probably unhelpful, but still. I would like to see VR move in the direction of more immersive and realistic gameplay, rather than getting sucked into a race for the lowest common denominator. And even though Oculus was never really set to compete in the high-end graphics end of things, at least with a gaming-focused company at the helm we might see innovative experiences like Beat Saber being developed, instead of Fortnite clones and god forbid whatever the PopCap/Zynga craze upcoming will be. For my money, I bet Farmville makes a comeback in VR, complete with VIRTUAL PETS (available in the Facebook store for $19.99 each)
