"Almost all"? In this list, I see 92 out of the top 494 subreddits, or about 18.6% of those subreddits. There's no way that's "almost all".

I might just be a grouch, but this seems like pointless fearmongering. Have these users done anything wrong? They're putting in hours of work every day to maintain their subreddits. They weren't trying to hide this fact. This same information is clearly visible in the subreddit sidebar and user pages.

Mods hire people they know and trust. It's not that unreasonable. Many others are on specifically for dealing with problems like spam or CSS.

There's thousands of subreddits moderated by different individuals. If you don't like a moderator, go find (or create!) an alternative. I see no sense in shaming others just because they're effective.

I wonder how much my experience would change if I blocked the users / subreddits listed here. I might just do that over a free weekend to see if it's better, feels more organic.

Definitely let us know how that goes if you do. I'd be interested in hearing impressions of the differences or lack thereof.

Is it unreasonable to assume the more common names on there are getting paid by someone to do something? At some point, it has to be a day job right?

@suspended - As someone that made it to the front page a couple of times due to being a moderator I can tell you it felt good. Even though it was cheap and maybe not quite earned you feel powerful. So for these users I think it’s more about the eyeballs than the points.

This makes too much sense, I'm going to stick with the conspiracy theory angle.

        A stretch? Expert-level yoga.

I would absolutely not be surprised to find out that some of them are getting paid by someone to do something but to suggest that it's a significant number enough for it to be an assumption writ-large across all power moderators is very unlikely. As the scale of something increases, the likelihood of it being secret decreases. With volunteer moderators on the internet where egos are large, second-order decision making skills are unused, and things are generally overvalued emotionally, it decreases even further.

There was one time when the Star Wars Battlefront subreddit moderators got offered payment by EA.

Right? The instances of it happening on a smaller scale blowing up are so frequent that I'd be amazed if a larger cabal was somehow still kept secret.

I think the internet has ruined conspiracy theories because we all want there to be large scale hidden secrets but it’s impossible to keep a secret now. There used to be a bunch back when communicating them was harder and people read and heard less from people outside of their community.

The big conspiracies are the obvious ones. The US military is largely a financial engine for military contractors and a means to global control of oil. It’s not a secret. But it’s a huge corrupt system. And then there’s the US healthcare system. It’s a glaring disaster ran by shady individuals. Our financial systems are just there to make the rich richer.

The wealthy and powerful are conspiring in public but a large chunk of conspiracy theorist energy is wasted on crackpot theories with just a sliver of possibility of being real. The discovery process is the easy part and people want to spend all of their time on discovery and not on fixing the exposed problems.
