Some updates for today

Just a couple quick notes for today:

Updates

I've made a few minor updates to layout and such here and there. I also changed the site's default sorting to "newest" while it's still pretty inactive, since that should make it easier to see the new posts. I'm planning to get an update in pretty soon that will remember which sorting settings you change to (on an individual group basis), so you should be able to adjust that soon if you want to.

Still working on the things I mentioned in this post, hopefully should have a couple of those done in the next day or two. I know the lack of reply notifications is especially painful and hard to keep conversations going at all, so I'm trying to get that in very soon.

Invites + "going public"

I'm inviting some more people directly today, so there will probably be various new faces showing up. If any of you have others that you want to invite, definitely let me know and I can contact them myself or give you some invite codes.

Currently, my plan is to start going more public tomorrow or Wednesday, trying to spread the announcement post out a bit more and get more people invited. I'll probably give all of you some invite codes at that point too, whether you want them or not. If you have particular suggestions for where you think I should (or shouldn't) try to get attention on the post, let me know.

Thanks, it's really great to see some people getting started using the site.

Lots of /r/listentothis folks are here now as well. We're looking forward to building the music community here that reddit could never give us the tools to create. Pure human-powered music recommendations and discussions. After all the time on reddit fighting the design and trying to work around it, I think we can finally see how that can be done. It'll be so weird having admins who actually listen and build features that make it happen... what will I bitch about all day in slack/mod chat? :P

Our chief impediment was the existence of the downvote, so even now, this is better than reddit for music.

When we wrote all those rules and bots for listentothis I never imagined people would become so pedantic about it. We used to make posts breaking the rules all the time, as long as it wasn't mainstream 'corporate-bullshit' music and had a chance at starting a discussion.

Listentothis has become far too mechanical/robotic, I'm looking forward to not making those mistakes a second time. Let's see what we can build around the human, rather than the robots... and let the site handle sorting it all for us.

Hello everyone, Excited to be here. Some of you may know me from reddit where I help out with IAmA and a few others. Excited to see ~ addressing a lot of the more frustrating things from the start.

You have a ton of options for getting the word out but I honestly don't think that's going the be the major hurdle. I think getting the word out to people who can attract the type of users you actually want on ~ is far more important.

To that end, I would try to focus on people interested in all the same issues you're trying to address with social media on ~ and with values/goals that you ideally want to imbue ~ with (quality discussion, more effective social media systems/tools, trusting users, punishing abusers, etc). E.g. Hacker News, legit tech journalists, legit tech bloggers (e.g. social media related Medium writers), social media researchers, /r/depthhub worthy communities and their moderators on reddit, etc.

So one minor question re: invites. I know a couple of really serious music-heads on reddit that I think might appreciate this site. Should I avoid discussing this site over there for the moment?

For a little while, yes. Once deimos posts the 'launch' we'll take it to the next level, and you'll have invites to hand out.
