Editing "grace period" for comments and topics increased to 5 minutes
This is an extremely minor change and I don't know if it's even really worth posting about, but I think it's probably good to make people aware: I've just increased the "grace period" for editing both comments and topics to 5 minutes (previously it was only 2 minutes). That is, any edits inside the first 5 minutes after it was posted won't mark the post with the (edited ... ago) text.
Currently, all older posts that were edited between 2-5 minutes after posting will still be marked as edited, but I'll probably go back and un-mark those as well.
Updated all old posts now as well.
I like this. Good change!
I always catch my typos riiiight after the 2 minute grace period.
Yeah, I've noticed that if I just rely on the live preview then mistakes will just manifest themselves in the post. No matter how much I check before posting, they always pop up..
Idk if I just get tunnel vision and fix things inside the paragraphs but forget about the flow of the entire comment as a whole or what, but it's quite common that on longer form comments I'll have to re-arrange/split up paragraphs a lot.
5 mins makes that process a lot less frantic if you've got a long one, or if you've found a few errors lurking. So this is a very nice change that I didn't even know I wanted!
Although this does open some sneaky edit stuff which might get a bit murky down the line.
I've never seen a live preview here. Am I missing something?
Just added Tildes Extended to FF. Thanks for pointing that out.
Oops I forgot that i had an extension. I guess the 5 minutes grace is even more needed. Someone here made a thing https://github.com/theCrius/tildes-extended
Since this topic is about UI changes I have a question for you @Deimos.
I saw that there was a post that was deleted (“topic removed by user” was the text in red up top I believe), but I can still go and see the post via navigating old commmets. It just doesn’t show in the main post feed.
Is this by design?
Yeah, I think that the topic author should be able to delete their posts if they want to, but I think it's too far to give them the power to completely destroy all the comments and conversations that might have been going on in the topic as well.
I like that, it happens too often on other sites.
Now I have to wait 5 minutes to reply to a comment in case they change something. Other than that, I don’t see a problem with giving more time for people to catch errors or make additions. Thanks for the update.
Why do you need to wait? The marker doesn't prevent them from changing anything.
Because when there’s a marker the etiquette of providing an explanation of what has been added or changed saves any conversation derailment. I just feel I should wait the 5 minutes so I know the comment I’m replying to is finalized and there won’t be any ninja edits.
I think I support OP here - this does open itself to abuse.
I mean, not with just us here, but in the longer term.
There's an easy work around ;)
Which is?
Quoting.
I refute that! :)
>implying implications
:)
Meme's aside, I certainly recognize the potential for abuse in a longer grace period (I always missed that 2min window though, so I think it's great). However, in the future we'll have that reputation system, and systems in place to combat systemic misuse. Plus, other users will keep us honest. If somebody is constantly editing their posts to something wildly different, then people will catch on and call bullshit on that. That would get noticed, and things can be dealt with from there.
But where is Lynx 'Edited' note?
You posted 2 hours after them...
Much appreciated!
Running a killer site here. Love it a lot more than reddit.
