Meta on: HELP trapped in one day time loop
While the occasional less serious post can be interesting, I hope ~talk does not devolve into only being silly jokes. It would ruin the atmosphere of ~ as a more serious discussion board. I don't think anything needs to be done at the moment, but if ~talk or another board gets overrun with joke content, is there any plan do deal with it?
I think we're going to need tag filters very soon, or alternatively I'll just have to start moderating and/or appointing other people to be able to. I've been letting things go so far, but that's definitely not the way it's going to be for very long.
Probably not, at this point. There's still only been 13 topics posted in ~talk in the last 24 hours, it's not like we're being flooded. But things can't stay unmoderated for long if we want to maintain any semblance of quality.
I dunno man, seems like a pretty legitimate post to me...
But seriously, I think content like that should be sparing, and tagged appropriately.
Perhaps content like that should be relegated to ~misc.
I would think more along the lines of ~talk.absurd or something; especially this early on where there isn’t a group for everything, ~misc can serve an important purpose as a catch-all. It doesn’t deserve to be overrun with surrealist joke posts any more than ~talk does imo 😛
I thought it was a fun, creative post. Quality is subjective, but I think you'd agree it wasn't as bad as all the "what is the sexiest sex you've ever sexed?" questions on AskReddit.
I fully agree that it is a fun post. I am just worried that there will be 5 similar posts within the next 24 hours. If I did not make my opinion clear enough, I want the occasional funny post, but not constant "fun" posts. If we get too many of them, it will ruin the charm.
"I want the occasional funny post, but not constant "fun" posts"
So... what exactly do you want, then? If you want fact-based discussions, such as news, well, other services like Reddit are faster at alerting people to breaking news, and they cover a wider audience. There's no politics section yet, even though politics are a major factor in people's lives... So other than posts like "What's your favorite [music|video game|speaker setup|other things]".. what niche do you want to see Tildes move toward, if not fun stream of consciousness stuff?
Its hard to describe exactly. I was not saying anything against posts like what is your favorite X? I was simply worried that after the success of Help trapped in a time loop, we will have many more similar, jokey posts, which would be a significant difference from the more serious look ~ seems to be going for.
jokey posts, which would be a significant difference from the more serious look ~ seems to be going for
On one hand (paw?), I enjoy serious discussion. Helping people, debating, what have you.
On the other, jokey stuff is also a big part of my day. I enjoy smiling and laughing. In the post you referenced, I dropped a reference to a 25 year old repeating day loop movie that some younger users might not even get. But I did, and it made me smile.
I'm just as happy to start quoting Airplane! at the slightest provocation, Simpsons references, or any number of other things that are part of our shared cultural identity.
Where is the line drawn between a serious service, and a robust sense of humor?
Remember that there is a danger in being too elitist.
I don't know the answer to be honest. I am just afraid that we will go funny post funny post funny post and then, two weeks later we will be overrun by funny posts and never have anything else. In essence, I am afraid of going full askreddit.
In essence, I am afraid of going full askreddit.
See, that's the thing. Reddit has tons of memes, cat pictures, and other humorous noise, but it also has posts asking about very serious things. People helping others escaping domestic violence, people supporting each other to leave addictions behind, breaking news and robust discussions about those items, etc.
Reddit isn't exactly what you're worried about, if you take a wider view. That isn't to say that they don't have flaws - Hateful subreddits, advertising, corporate ivory tower management, and more.
Is it that you never saw that stuff on Reddit?
I submit that moderation here should be a light touch, curbing obvious trolls and abuses, but otherwise only keeping posts on the tasteful side.
I am not talking about hate speech really. I am referring to how askreddit gets the constant stream of slight variations of 15 or so questions. It has a few that break the mold, but it is very repetitive around a few topics.
That unfortunately almost seems to be human nature.
Sure, search is a thing, and we can ask people to google things first, but again - Sometimes it's just plain old human nature to just post without searching.
It's an extremely common issue in almost every online forum, and it has been so for many years.
I feel like a group as general as "talk" is basically meant for fun posts. There are groups for specific subjects like science, technology, sports, movies, books, etc. "Talk" would presumably be for lighthearted conversation.
We should be able to tag submissions just like we can tag comments.
Also, the addition of "fluff" and "interesting" OR "insightful" tags would be helpful, IMO
