    More sheer curiosity. I have a decent amount of karma on reddit, but that isn't a 1:1 ratio of upvotes. I think the negatives could be, as Cleb mentioned, people just trying to get the most...

I think the negatives could be, as Cleb mentioned, people just trying to get the most points, spamming the site or just turning it into a circlejerk or whatever. Another downside is it's a point of user data to collect.
