For those of you who may have a hard time understanding this article, this is what the semantic apocalypse is in laymens terms:

Those of us in Western society have always had differences- political, religious, economic, etc- but, as a society, we have always had a common thread. A base line, if you will.
The problem is that, over the past couple of decades, this has really begun to break down- to the point where we now can't even agree what reality is anymore.

Basically- some people used to believe the sky was baby blue; others believed it was periwinkle. But we all agreed it was blue- we simply argued about what type of blue it is. Now this base line has broken- some people think it's purple, some people think it's green, and an ever shrinking number of people still believe it to be blue.

So the article asks this question:

So what happens when we inevitably leave that shared neurophysiology behind?

What happens when we, as a society, can't even agree on what reality is?

This is a very important question to ask. I'll read the article and update this comment with my thoughts afterwards.

Also, IMO, this article reads... pretentiously. Like, the language used in this article is unnecessarily complex. So if you're having trouble understanding, don't worry- it's not you.

    Edit- I finished the article

So basically, OP is saying: if we don't find a solution to this, then mass madness- or, as I interpret it, mass chaos- will occur.

Then they stop speculating, state that the best solution is for a government enforced culture of some sort (state run religion, for example) and then they end the post. So allow me to begin where OP left off-
(Note- this is my personal opinion, NOT OPs)

While there is no place for the average, "static" human in a world of madness, the fact of the matter is, they will not have a choice but to stay put here on Earth, for where else would they go? Thus, because reason, as a species, will have escaped us, the world as we know it will change dramatically- perhaps even within a generation or two. Combined with the threat of a significantly warmer Earth, madness will, over time, create ever expanding conflicts that, to the "static" human, would be relatively simple to solve- but to the mad, such solutions will be impossible, resulting in the destruction of the current political status-quo and the erosion of the power of independent states. Humanity then may eventually devolve in to such a state wherein the idea of the modern state will simply no longer exist, and instead we will be organized in to hundreds of thousands of smaller groups- maybe we will revert to the old idea of city-states, or maybe, through sheer madness, a new system will arise. This is the true "apocalypse"- the destruction of the human race as we know it, by our own hands.

    Wow, this is concerning.

My father in law (who has been a lawful resident since the 1980s) used food stamps once, in 2001, because he was laid off from his job (there was a small recession from the dot com bubble popping at the time, so a lot of people got laid off from their jobs back then). He was on food stamps for a couple of months, managed to get solid work, and has never been on food stamps or any form of public welfare before or since.

He literally used the social welfare program for its purpose- as a temporary stand-by to help get you by between jobs. He isn't some lazy, border jumping Mexican menace who has five kids with no papers- he's a hard working, honest man who firmly believes in doing things the right way.

This proposal would bar him from ever becoming a citizen.

Thankfully, his wife (my mother in law) got her citizenship a few years ago, so she's safe. But now I'm very concerned about my father in law. :/

The Strokes became popular in a very weird and interesting time in music. The economy had just gone bad, and popular music in general was shifting away from metal over to disco (Slipknot -> MGMT -> Daft Punk/Random Access Memories). But for a very short time- 2008 - 2010- it genuinely looked like Grunge might make a comeback of sorts under the guise of lo-fi.

Alas, it never happened. Rock went full disco with MGMTs "Electric Feel", then dropped off the face of the fucking Earth altogether and went completely underground. I don't know of a single mainstream rock song created by a relatively new rock band that has reached the billboard top 100 in nearly a decade (So, Foo Fighters don't count).

Rock as a genre, in the mainstream, simply no longer exists.

Another one hit wonder that came out at this time was "Ride" by The Vines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KL_dI3GtB4o

Anecdotally speaking, the result is that people such as myself who graduated high school around 2007 - 2010 all really like rock music- but most people I've met who graduated before or after do not.

    Right now, nothing.

But my wife and I are looking to purchase a house. Yes, right now. At the top of the market.

Why? So we can rent it out about 2 years from now.

You see, renting is cheaper than buying right now where I live. That doesn't happen very often.

That means that, after the housing market starts to decline (which I believe is just now starting), rents will increase significantly- especially in areas like San Diego, where a large Navy presence effectively creates a rent floor via BAH and other military benefits.

The combination of a severe lack of housing being built, a huge Navy buildup (up to 30,000+ more people coming to San Diego in the next couple of years) without the federal funds for on-base housing (meaning that they MUST live off base), the proliferation of white hipsters artificially raising prices on their own right due to "culture" and overhyping this city, and the fact that people will likely start losing their houses because the bubble will pop (although not as many as in 2008) means that rents in San Diego are going to fucking skyrocket about 2 years from now.

San Diego very well could become one of the most expensive cities in the United States to rent in due to this unique combination. So eventhough rent right now is not high enough to cover the mortgage, I believe that it absolutely will- and more- 2 years from now.

So soon, maybe, hopefully, I will have a decent amount of passive income. Or the whole thing might come crashing down and I'll be stuck with a severely overpriced house that I don't like. Who knows... that's the risk you've gotta take these days to make a living.

One reason multiculturalism is becoming less popular is not that Australians are racist, but that the fetish of diversity is loosening those essential social bonds of civility.

Okay... the way this is worded is worrying.

But I do actually agree with the sentiment. There is a big difference between diversity and "the fetish of diversity".

I'm going to speak from the point of view from the United States.

The former is encouraging minority groups to attend a specific college through grants and scholarships; the latter is that same college hand-holding those minority groups so that they "appear" more diverse, under the white-supremicist assumption that minorities are intellectually unable to get in on their own merits.

There's a really big push among white people to force their own version of diversity for diversitys sake. We must have x percent of black people. We must have x percent of asians. X percent of latinos. Etc. The problem is that it is purely superficial; a fetish, if you will. It just absolves white people of their "guilt", and doesn't actually solve anything.

Maybe we should consider figuring out what the root of these problems are, and then fixing them, instead of metaphorically patting ourselves on the back because we are "diverse"?

No, we're not "lucky". We're normal.

That may change soon though- single parent households have been on the rise over the past two decades, and the opioid epidemic doesn't help.

Anecdotally speaking- all of the friends that I went to high school with that have kids are either unmarried or they're single and raising the kid on their own. Meanwhile, my wife and I are the only married couple we know who's our age (I'm 27, she's 26).

I personally find this very concerning- an entire generation of children are being raised in mostly single parent households. There are way too many baby-mommas and baby-daddies out there! What's the deal with that?

The way I see it, there are a few ways this could work out. From most likely to least:

*Nothing happens. Kim gets his legitimacy and Trump gets his photo-op and a place in the history books.

*Kim and Trump begin negotiating a treaty that officially ends the Korean war, and establishes TWO seperate Koreas. (tie scenario)

*Kim and Trump begin negotiating a treaty that officially ends the Korean war, and establishes ONE united Korea with a transition period. (The South wins scenario)

The following scenarios probably won't happen but aren't outside the realm of possibility:

*Trump and Kim start negotiations, and everything looks fine- until out of nowhere the leader of South Korea is assassinated by a north Korean spy, and the Korean war turns hot again (bait/switch scenario)

*Trump uses the "negotiations" and takes advantage of Kims vulnerability by sending a secret team to take out the North Korean government without anybody knowing- until Kim is arrested in Singapore at the end of the talks, that is.

*Either Kim or Trump pulls some James Bond shit with a poison-needle-ring. when they shook hands, the other person got poisoned, and they won't know it until after the summit is over.

Hey, all this speculating is pretty fun :)

Anybody else have any crazy scenarios?

What you are witnessing is the flandarization of fanbases.

Why is this happening? Because as fan bases get older and their participants age, more people move on- leaving behind only the radicals. These radicals make the fanbase unappealing to most newer, younger members, so the only people who join are older, more radical people.

It's a viscious cycle that only ends when the fandom dies or is rendered irrelevant by the next generation (aka a "fad").

You can see this in anime- the millennial fanbase is huge- and cancerous. As a result, fewer Gen Z'ers actually like anime, which means major anime studios have no choice but to pander to an increasingly older, and more radical, demographic, largely relying on edginess and nostalgia to attract fans.

Anime is, simply put, a millennial fad. And I say this as a self-described millennial otaku.

And thus, the anime fanbase flandarizes. Just like with MLP.

Computer usage and basic diagnostics/troubleshooting? Yes.

    Programming? No.

The former is- and has been- essential in daily life for over 20 years now.

The latter is not essential in most people's lives, and would be quickly forgotten by a majority of those who take it.

Do not make the mistake of confating the two, like many technology evangelists do. They are not the same thing.

Edit- also I want to say, there are plenty of classes that were cut during the 2008 recession that should come back before making computers mandatory for everyone. These include:

    Home Ec / cooking

    Personal finance

    Automotive classes

Job training courses for high school seniors (such as welding, and yes- computer repair and programming)

My biggest fear is that a shooting will occur at one of my children's schools, and that they will face a lifetime of abuse and harassment because they survived.

I fear that this abuse and harassment will result in their future being forcibly taken away from them by making them unemployable, taking away their privacy, artificially and needlessly enforcing depression on to them, and- I hope to God this doesn't happen- homicide, or suicide.

Simply because they were a victim.

This fear is so ingrained in to myself and my wife that we are seriously considering moving to Japan to teach English so that we won't have to worry about our children having a future.
