Can we invite in another community?

I frequently read the hfy subreddit for a specific genre of writing[1]. This community predates reddit and came of of some writing forums on 4chan if I understand correctly. Recently they have been evaluating whether or not they should move again due to reddit ToS changes[2].

Would this community be interested in inviting them to Tildes? They are a well modded community with a long history and it might give a boost here bunch of users from a text based group

You'd have to ask Deimos if he wants to invite a whole community at once. He has said that he wants to keep this site invite-only for a long time (up to a year), and restrict the number of people here, so I don't like your chances.

There are currently ≈3,000 people on Tildes, and that subreddit has over 75,000 subscribers. In my personal opinion, I would say a big NO to inviting more people from a single subreddit than this whole site currently has in total. We would be dominated by the interests of those people. We would basically become /r/HFY2. We would turn into merely a science-fiction writing site (based on what I see in their sidebar).

Also, I really don't think it's feasible to invite 75,000 people to a website that has only just become operational, and which currently has only 4% of that population. For one thing, we don't even know if Deimos' servers can handle that big an increase in traffic!

However, if you have some invite codes, you can choose a couple of people from /r/HFY to invite. Deimos has given many people here invite codes, but I expect he wants us to consider carefully who we invite. So choose wisely!

We are talking about massively increasing the size of the community; I’m seeing 75k subscribers and >1000 online on the subreddit OP linked. So this would have to be a more concerted thing, as at some point it would require the leadership over there to say, “Okay, everyone, we are leaving Reddit for X.” Then what—they all email @Deimos without warning? Not likely to pan out 😛

And if they did all come over here right now, it seems like they would completely dominate the community, which may not be the best way for Tildes to grow. Unless that online count was all people linked from this thread lol.

But it does seem at first glance like a kind of community that would align with the goals of Tildes. I say wait until ~ is open to the public and there is a wider influx of other groups. That makes the most sense to me personally, if HFY doesn’t have too strong of an itch to ditch Reddit ASAP.)

In general, the question is merely as follows, does a community fit in here?
While it is certainly possible, you can't just assume you would acquire your own subgroup. The group management on here is usually topical, less community-based.

Further in the future, before completely opening up, the admins will probably start to automatically distribute invite keys to every new member. At that point, you could just start the relocation on your own.

I'm afraid that the fact the tides cannot be read without being registered, at the moment, would not be what they are looking for.

It will be sometime (months, years) until you would be able to create a sub group for hfy specifically.
