Feature request to add an option for polls to topics

It would be very nice to have an option for multiple choice polls in topics so that the comments remain in-depth while giving people the chance to give their input on simple questions.

I think there's two potential use cases for this:

    • fixed options - the Black Mirror episode polls would be an example of this. Choices would be fixed at 1-5 and only changeable by the poll creator.
    • open-ended options - I think the what OS do you use? thread is a good example of this. Users could vote for existing options as well as add new ones. This might need something similar to tagmod privileges, where admins or trusted users could clean up / merge poll options that were accidentally duplicated.

It would also be another great way for lurkers to participate without actually being forced to dive into the conversation.

Use strawpool or something similar like the black mirror re-watch topics are doing?

The benefit of having it baked in to Tildes is that the results would be much more trustworthy, because it could enforce one account, one vote. Long-term when the site is open for public registration it might need tweaking, such as needing non-zero reputation to vote to prevent registering new accounts simply for poll manipulation, but that's both a long way off and very easy to do.

To add on this, maybe the poll creators could be given the option to make all votes public. This would help with preventing vote manipulation on more sensitive topics.

I second that: polls shouldn't be natively supported by Tildes, especially when there are a couple dozen websites who will already do that for us out-of-the-box. There are much more important things for Tildes to focus on at this point in time, maybe a few years from now it would be a neat minor feature to have.

People fooling themselves that having it inside Tildes makes it more secure is just asinine, that'd just give it the illusion of being more trustworthy without delivering on it at all. Other people saying that this will promote good discussion... uh no? People will just vote on one of the given options instead of actually discussing... how is that a good thing?!

When the reputation system is in place, you'd likely need some level of reputation to even vote. Agree though—it's not exactly a priority right now.

Yeah, my point went way above your head if you think the reputation system changes anything.

I wasn't thinking an external site. I'm just talking about really simple polls being built into the submission form for topics on Tildes itself.
