What sort of information could we show? Can it be thread-specific rather than site-specific? Is it possible to get tags, number of comments, or summaries, or quotes from top exemplary comments?...
What sort of information could we show? Can it be thread-specific rather than site-specific? Is it possible to get tags, number of comments, or summaries, or quotes from top exemplary comments? How much can we cram in there, and will it show a short blurb people can click to expand into something larger, or are we locked to the short blurb? I must confess I've never paid much attention to how these other services pull up and handle the metadata. How much control do they give to the website that's being linked to, and is it standardized somewhat across services?
Yes, it can be thread-specific, and could definitely be anything related to the thread that Tildes itself shows (tags, etc.). For example, in that area, reddit links put something like "18 votes...

For example, in that area, reddit links put something like "18 votes and 5 comments so far on Reddit". (This doesn't always work well because a lot of services cache them, so it'll end up showing extremely outdated information sometimes)
Usually you don't have much space, but it depends on the service displaying the embed. They're generally done through the Open Graph protocol, which uses meta tags in the linked page's HTML. The relevant tags in Tildes' HTML currently are (for this thread):
<metaproperty="og:image"content="https://tildes.net/images/tildes-logo-144x144.png"><metaproperty="og:site_name"content="Tildes"><metaproperty="og:type"content="website"><metaproperty="og:title"content="Suggestion: On threads, substitute 'Tildes: a non-profit community site' text for information about the thread - ~tildes"><metaproperty="og:description"content="Tildes: a non-profit community site">
If you look at the screenshot you can see how pretty much all of those are used by Discord, and it's specifically the og:description that's being requested to change.
Yep, and presumably on any other services that pull up meta-information like this when links are shared on their platform. I kinda like the idea of pimping the content, rather than the site...

I'm not sure if they all grab from the same place, so this could be one of those 'too fiddly to implement' things if they all do it different ways

What information specifically do you think would be good to show instead?

Am I correct in assuming that you mean for this meta-information to show in comments on Discord, and not on Tildes itself?

Thanks for the clarification. I've edited the title of this topic to reflect what you're actually asking.
