I'm a little torn on this one - I think encouraging people to read the other comments first before posting their own is a good thing. It's still easy for them to just skip to the bottom without doing it, but by putting the box at the bottom it at least implies that it's something to do after reading the comments, instead of before.
So this is something you guys probably need to discuss. Having it at the bottom makes it feel much more like a forum. Having it at the top makes it feel much more like Reddit.

I like the idea behind it, but what about a threads with way more comments than now? Like a couple hundred? People would just scroll down without looking, anyway. Maybe make it a pop-out? Like,...

Maybe make it a pop-out? Like, not be too inviting about posting a reply (by having a textbox open by default) and require pressing one button, similar to "reply" for a comment, only also for top-level posts?
It's a good idea, but in practice folks are just gonna slam the scroll wheel to get their words in. One thing though: the added effort needed to comment in a giant thread might reduce the amount...

Yeah, that is precisely why I like it at the bottom too. It’s only a mild inconvenience and if the focus on tildes is quality rather than quantity then having it at the bottom makes more sense...

Perhaps something that would address both my and your concerns would be a "Comment" button at the bottom of the page -- essentially just make the current "Post a comment" text a button that causes...

Then it's very clear (or at least, harder to mix up) which context you are replying to
Metafilter places it at the bottom and I've always liked that. You don't necessarily read all the prior comments, but I think it's helpful for reminding people that you're sharing the space with...

Yeah I only liked comment box at top because it's a reddit habit, but now I'm used to scrolling through and seeing what's what. I mean, worst case, you can press page down or keep hiding comments...

I agree, though my reasoning for this is slightly different; I have, on multiple occasions, tried to reply to a user and not realized that I forgot to hit the reply button and submitted the reply...

I think I agreed with keeping it at the bottom when there were only a few small posts. But stuff like this or this makes my scroll wheel sad. Though I will admit it pushed me to read more comments.

Could be possible to leave it up to user preferences with the default being the bottom. Or just A/B test it and see what users prefer.

Also, I think it's a UX thing. If you're sorting comments by "newest first", it's a bit odd to scroll to the bottom to add your comment to the top.

Just a thought!

However with the low user count right now, it kinda has the side effect of having me read other comments.

I've done that a half dozen times as well. :P
