Doesn't this already exist? At least for me, I see (OP) suffixed to comment handles in threads that they've created. Or did you mean color the comments differently?

I don't see any reason why that method of comment distinction couldn't be implemented here from a technical perspective... but I personally think the way Ars does it is pretty gaudy and would add far more visual clutter to the site, which is especially problematic on mobile where space is at a premium (as Bauke pointed out).
I also haven't ever had any problems with the way it currently works on Tildes, and actually find it to be pretty easy to recognize all the various comment distinctions. IMO the left border is also especially convenient for quickly finding particular types of comments while scrolling down. So given that, I don't personally see the need for anything to change here in that regard... However, if others feel similar to yourself and are also struggling with the current system, it might be worth taking a look at alternatives, which I certainly wouldn't be opposed to.
On the two themes I use they're all pretty visually distinct IMO: white theme = orange (#e66b00) for new, yellow (#ffd700) for selected, black for OP, purple (#551a8b) for own comment, and blue...

white theme = orange (#e66b00) for new, yellow (#ffd700) for selected, black for OP, purple (#551a8b) for own comment, and blue (#1460aa) for exemplary
dracula = orange (#ffb86c) for new, yellow (#f1fa8c) for selected, white for OP, light purple (#bd93f9) for own comment, and light blue (#8be9fd) for exemplary
(I also use Baukula on Desktop, where the colours are even more distinct)
But if they're too close on some of the themes for you, let me know which ones, and I can make a Gitlab issue to investigate changing them.
On white theme I think own comment's purple looks too similar to both exemplary's blue and OP's black, at least at first glance. I tend to confuse them, but maybe that's just me.

OP's also get a white-left hand border on their comments too. I don't think colouring the text "OP" is gonna' help much more!

Interestingly, I did find the one occasion when OP is not highlighted white that way: when it's a new comment, along with other new comments.
Yeah I'm not sure about order of precedence here. Exemplary overrides a lot of the border colors, including OP, for example.
It's a black line in the light themes like the Solarized Light I'm using.
You know what? I do agree with you. I think the way Ars Technica approaches this problem with comment labels is definitely better—especially because it removes the issue where you can really only display a single type of highlight with a border.
You'd have to come up with another term instead of "comment labels" though, maybe comment lapels :P.

What I don't like about the current system is the colors. Blue, black and purple look too similar.

Oh okay.
