Feature Request: Saving Topics and Comments
I think the option to save a topic or comment would be a good addition. For example, I have had a ~music topic about music everyone's listening to open for over a day so that I can pick a new group to listen to each time I do homework. Sure, I could write them all somewhere, but I think it's a nice QoL improvement nonetheless.
Edit: I'd like to add to this @Ganymede 's idea of following a topic to get notified of new comments inside it. Maybe this could apply to a specific comment chain, too, since a whole topic will be a lot once the site explodes. ;)
Yeah that is definitely something I use a ton on reddit too... so I will definitely be pushing for this feature eventually. Although @deimos is a little busy with more important things right now like getting the site (and documentation) ready for opensource. Thanks for the suggestion. :)
Of course. I read his current objectives earlier, and they are obviously more important, but I figured I'd throw this out there before I forget.
Yeah, it's a good reminder for us too. We have been thinking about this stuff for a long time now but there is just so much going on and so much to remember that we're bound to forget even "simple" features we originally imagined having on the site like this. Now that we have gitlab up and running I can start adding them there though.
I used “save” a surprising amount on reddit, too. If it’s a video and I’m in a crowded subway with no headphones, I’d rather watch it later. Ironically, that’s the first thing they hid behind a hamburger menu on the new “mobile first” design on reddit.
Speaking of which, it would be very useful to allow users to filter saved posts by tilde and tags, or maybe even allow them to add their own metadata. I don't come back to my "saved" list on reddit much, because without gold, there's no way of filtering it.
Until then, https://pinboard.in it is :)
I wish I can tag my own comment as Off topic :)
I like the idea of “following” a post to get notified of new stuff, but if it’s just a bookmark, maybe we can rely on built-in browser bookmarking functionality?
The problem with built-in browser bookmarking is that unless you're specifically using browser functionality that syncs bookmarks across devices (a potential privacy concern), your bookmarks are tied to a specific device, whereas a save feature on the website will allow you to access that bookmarked content across devices without relying on the browser.
I agree, and a lot of the time I use duckduckgo, so a bookmark reliance has its pitfalls there, too.
We have definitely talked about this as well... by perhaps allowing people to "subscribe/follow" comment sections and threads that interest them even if they are not the OP. It could easily function side by side with the reply notification system.
Along with "bookmarking" (please let not use "save" as we're not really saving anything) a builtin remindMeBot woud be awesome.
Sometime I just don't have time to read a topic but want to check on that later.
Or I can't watch a video / listen to a song cause I don't have my headphones with me.
