Tildes CSS Changes
There were a few things that I was a bit uncomfortable with, so I created a few css styles to improve some aspects of the experience.
Reddit like theme
I'm used to Reddit, so I created a quick theme to make Tildes a bit more like Reddit: https://pastebin.com/1rMhbFMF
Hidden tags
Seeing a [Joke] tag can sometimes ruin a joke, so I created a snippet that hides tags unless you hover over them: https://pastebin.com/Bzvr3Vmp
Moved the submit a comment box
I made a snippet to move the comment box to the top of the page: https://pastebin.com/WCqv3Mr2
Love the tags hidden by default <3
Not much the comment box change as it's something that has a reason to be, but hey, fair game :)
Edit: I included the tags css customization in my script with credits: https://gist.github.com/theCrius/04dc86bea0ed0f1cbec7e57f1aaff9aa
I think long term (once they're actually hooked up to something) there's really no reason to ever show the tags (if people can filter them regardless)
I was gonna write a post about it today but ran out of time. A good stop gap solution would at least be to have the tag color scale with the number of times it's applied so it's less visually distinct if there's only one or two noise tags applied or the like
So far this is one of my biggest gripes with tags. A single user adding a tag gets too much visual weight in my opinion. On Reddit, a single down vote is almost invisible to the user being down voted, but a single user tagging a comment is many times more impactful. I also think it might be neat to experiment with a scoring algorithm so that other users can challenge tags. Basically if you see a comment tagged as "Troll" and you disagree, you can tag it as "Not Trolling" (or whatever).
Honestly, I'm thinking about just totally disabling the comment tags for now. There are a lot of pieces missing for them to really work properly, and I think with the site growing faster than expected they're probably going to cause more issues than they help.
I think that's a good idea. Honestly, they aren't really adding anything anywhere I've seen them used yet, it's just cosmetic and somewhat brash/abrasive. Let's bring it back when it's more badass. Even in that trump thread I wasn't feeling the flame/troll were on point.
Maybe we could show tags as perhaps little colored balls (each tag has a different color) to the right of the time stamp? Small and unobtrusive if you're just reading, but perfectly available if you're looking for them. You could even combine it with /u/dstaley's idea of changing the shading based on how many of that tag is applied.
There is already a good topic about it floating around, try and browse by activity in ~tildes.
Hey, got an screenshots of what it looks like?
This is what the Reddit-like theme looks like: https://i.imgur.com/mgir4xO.png
