This is one of the reasons why I'm drawn into cars, they have their own "personalities", they seem to show some human characteristics that make them feel alive. I also sometimes had to describe my cars in such a way to people, almost like talking about a friend before presenting them to your other friends. "He's not a huge fan of the cold", "He's not going to let you get into second unless you do it at the right rev range", and so on.

I think everyone that owned vintage cars blasts them when listing all their issues, but if someone talks smack about their old, derelict Peugeot 106, then they'll tell you to quit it right now or else.

That certainly brought up memories of driving my 1997 bmw m3 during the 00s… didn’t have enough money to repair all the quirks and just learned to deal with them as best I could. Car would overheat so you had to run the heater… engine would start ticking, just needs more oil! Passenger door wouldn’t open, just unload everyone from drivers side! Good times.

My son got his first W2 job (previously he was working around the farm and doing random 1099 work) and we needed a second car.

He saw a Chrysler Fifth Avenue in North Carolina and wanted to drive down to pick it up, I decided to get him to look closer to home. We found a 1996 Buick Park Avenue an hour away and boy is it a sweet car…. And it doesn’t have any problems! It’s new enough to have airbags, traction control, OBD II and all that but old enough to look like a throwback, has no touchscreens, and gets 29 mpg which is not bad at all for a big car with a V6.

This reminds me of my old Baja super beatle I had! I wish I still had that car. I'm so much better equipped to deal with it now. Back then something would break and I would just be stranded poking...

I never thought I could be nostalgic for such a pain in the ass !

That's a wonderful article, especially his description of gear-changes. I drive an '81 VW Vanagon and it has its little ways. Starts just fine every day, but turn it off too soon and it'll be hours before there's a hope of getting the motor running again. Fortunately it's an automatic so no gear-change problems, though a VW bus I had back in the '70s was another matter.
