"Regulations are written in blood." Why do you have to keep learning the same lessons? It's only a matter of time before something goes wrong worse than water pouring onto the street.

Really interesting article, but I think it's over-blowing some of the the points (and I do think that this thing will eventually be a massive catastrophe that we will be lucky if it doesn't kill people).

I'm a local. I take the main freeway in the industrial area (i15) most days. The number of times i've seen trucks carrying shit improperly, especially dirt/mud/gravel, often without a license plate, is obscene. So i'm left wondering, is this because the boring company is "flaunting laws" or just operating under the same pile of "bottom bidder" nonsense in this town that causes this shit to happen daily.

There's also a very real point that yes, government overhead has killed most large works projects. The mix between "if you do not do this right you will eventually get 100s of people killed" and "well we want to make sure this won't annoy a group of yuppies, grifters, and maybe some not really endangered animal" is horrific, and it makes getting anything done in any real timeframe hyper expensive and a fucking nightmare.

Now, from my understanding, serious safety standards are being ignored as well. Things like "how the fuck do you get out if there's a fire", and that's absolutely an unacceptable nightmare, but at the same time, a lot of this feels like every other large project in Vegas i'm aware of. All sorts of violations, fines, improper behavior, and everything else.

The only major difference is that since this is private, yes there's the extremely scary "how much else is going on", but this article isn't the smoking gun I was hoping for.

The problem isn't regulations per se. The problem is individuals, organizations, and other self interested entities to use those regulations to hinder, burden, and kill projects they percieve as not being lucrative for their own interests.
Too often, objections to projects on environmental grounds has nothing to do with actually protecting the environment, it's just that NIMBYs have figured out that raising doubts about the environmental impact of a project is a useful tool they can use to ensure their property values continue to inflate. Same goes for worker protection laws, fiscal oversight rules, zoning laws, or the silver bullet that infrastructure obstructionists love: historic preservation legislation. Well thought out regulation is a good thing as long as the enforcement bodies are doing their due diligence and raising objections where it makes sense. They're a nightmare when they're allowed to be used by anyone as a weapon to stop anything they think won't make them money.

I'd argue it's absolutely both. There's plenty of government bloat that goes on and people just blindly enforcing and following regs that make no sense or are extremely time consuming or cumbersome.

It is well known in Nevada that Nevada Power works on a "fuck you find someone else" schedule. No matter what you had scheduled, they might very well just....not show up...and then force you to reschedule. This harms anyone trying to build, but especially small businesses which now get the joy of realizing they're not going to open, and thus start pulling in revenue, when they thought they were.

That's just one of MANY examples of the nonsense in this state alone.

Until local governments decide to rein him in, he'll keep doing things like this. Maybe his ultimate fall out of favor with MAGA will do it, or he'll find the line too far in supporting far right politics, idk.
