What the fuck is wrong with the world? Why does any legal system work this way? This is beyond absurd.

I saw this video by Chief MAKOi about this a few days ago, the situation seemed quite hopeless since it had not been resolved after such a long time. I feel like the video somewhat contributed to fixing the problem considering it has more than 800k views. If there was not much coverage about it, I doubt action would have been taken. Hope he gets compensated atleast.

Not a lot of this story made sense to me. The man looked awfully healthy and clean for allegedly living on an abandoned ship he couldn’t legally leave for 4 years.

The idea he literally swam to shore every few days and hoisted himself back on the deck after getting food and water (with what money?) and the notion he just couldn’t leave despite these illegal visits to shore. I’d say after 4 years most sane people would have found a way to escape, with all the refugees it doesn’t seem like it would be all that hard to smuggle himself out, or go to the Syrian embassy, or just disappear into the city and get work.

Yeah I don’t get it. I certainly have no doubts some kind of legal bullshit happened here like his passport being taken but I have a strong feeling many aspects of the story were embellished for sensationalism so he could get enough international outrage to embarrass the authorities into finally acting.

A few more story details here. When he rows to shore to get supplies he can only stay for two hours at most as the area is a restricted military zone. Other crew members were repatriated in September 2019, so Mohammad was not alone for 2 years but only for 7 months (which is no less unacceptable). The only reason Mohammad was allowed to leave was thanks to a local union representative who agreed to take his place as the ship’s guardian.

Yeah I wrote it in reference to when the guardian article was released, should have written it in reference to now.
