TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
Just started on Twin Peaks. It is one of those media phenomenon that I have heard other people talk about for decades, so I have a weird idea about what it may be - though must of it is confusing because some special weird Lynch stuff keeps coming up. So far it seems fairly straight forward. The murder plot hooked me right away and all the characters and the town are worth staying for. I am a big X-Files fan and it is easy to see how Twin Peaks have influenced that show. Can't wait to start the next episode.
Ugh Twin Peaks is so good. Savor that first season!
Someone recently made a very short video game demo based on it: https://blueroseteam.itch.io/twin-peaks-into-the-night
Wow that is pretty impressive. Nailed the 90s graphics style even.
Ive been watching Gen V, the boys spin off show, and its not good. Theres some great characters and cast but the episodes feel like filler and especially the last one just seemed like an expensive episode of scooby doo.
I really love Lizze Broadway but that's about it.
Second on that. The story feels super generic and I feel that a lot of things happen just for shock value.
??? GenV is super well done. Great show, highly recommended if you don't mind the rated R level content.
The Morning Show crams every news story over the last few years into every episode and its a bit much. I'm certain I've whined about this show I continue to watch, but its getting to the point where it becomes parody. The performances are also... not great.
I finished Winning Time and loved it. A lot of people didn't like the ending, but I did. Not sure what anybody would prefer... we all know their record.
This isn't trivia, but has there been a non-Apple phone on any modern Apple+ series?
they aren't wrong re: jumping the shark. One episode is going along fine --- they've got their Musk-type... and in what seems like a week, they've got covid, jan 6, all of ukraine... awkward sex scenes... and more! Its stupid.
All of Attenborough's Life series so neat. I admire the patience involved.
I’ve been watching the morning show as well on account of getting a new iPhone and a free subscription to apple TV.
Season 1 was 7/10 it was good, in a way because of the nostalgia of seeing Steve Carell and Jen Aniston and Reese W. I enjoyed it!
Season 2 was all over the place and really milked mitch and the italian side quest which I didnt care about and then covered covid… snore…
pretty much all of the 'this was in the news' bullshit ruined the series. It was a bad call on their part.
I really liked the first season of The Morning Show, but it probably should've just been a single-season series. I haven't started season 3 yet, but season 2 was just okay.
it would have been good as a one hit with the new girl coming in and the metoo dynamic / sort of redemption arc for Steve.
I find Aniston to be insufferable, though... so who knows.
Everything Now on Netflix is one of the most beautiful shows I've seen in quite a while. The cinematography and music choices are just so incredibly good; at times it almost feels like you're watching a chill music video but with a plot.
But the thing about this show that really shines is the character writing. It's utterly outstanding. The show is centered around the main character Mia being released from a year of rehabilitation because she has anorexia, and the show does a fantastic job of explaining the complex things she has been feeling, but the thing that really makes it stand above it's peers is how it manages to explore how Mia's anorexia has affected her friends and family. One of my favorite episodes (excepting, perhaps, the finale) is actually one where the narrator switches from being Mia's inner voice to her brother's - the only realistic way to explore his character as his response to his family's crisis was to withdraw into himself and be quiet. The characters are all very different from eachother and are facing such different problems that there's sure to be something that you will personally identify with. One of them starts off looking like they're just there for comic relief but ends up being fairly important to the story, and it's impressive how much her character gets fleshed out.
Serial dramas tend to be fairly predictable, but that's not the case for this show. Expectations are often subverted. There's lots of romance between the characters but it's never as simple as it is in other shows, and that does a lot into making them feel like real people rather than characters on a screen. The main character has four potential mates throughout the show, and the one she lands on at the end is very satisfying indeed. At the same time it's not really happening randomly; everything has foreshadowing. The writers know what you want to see happen at the climax and they deliver it.
One last thing that I'll praise the show about is how it handles some of the more difficult subjects. Particularly when it comes to Mia's anorexia. In some ways, it's shoved off to the side through a lot of the story. It's great because it gives you a chance to understand and really get to know everyone without forcing them to address that particular issue. But of course, it never really goes away, and it makes it clear to you that the issues that caused her to develop it in the first place are still there. It has all of the little details that you wouldn't have known if you never dealt with mental issues before.
It's also got Stephen Fry playing the sympathetic therapist. Might be worth watching just for that. :P
I highly highly recommend Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. The animation is striking, the entire Ubisoft catalog of games is somehow respectfully thrown in a blender, and, most of all, it told a story that made me actually care about what the fuck happens to a talking assassin frog.
Started watching The Wire after innumerable recommendations. I’m four episodes in and so far it’s entertaining but a little dated, which is understandable given that it’s 20 years old. What I found hilarious though, was the intro to the second or third episode… they have a close up of a “dead” man at the morgue with a bullet hole in his head and the actor flinches/moves his eyes while his photo is taken. I’ve never caught such an obvious blooper before. My guess is that it wasn’t noticeable on a smaller screen with standard definition; but it was jarring on my 65 inch oled at 4k with AI upscaling lol.
I am also watching the Wire for the first time. I am halfway through season 2.
I am very impressed with the complexity of the story, with the gritty cynical sad content, with the deep thoughtful portrait of Baltimore government and residents. It was clearly ground breaking at the time.
Rather than subscribe to HBO, we purchased DVDs for a reasonable price.
Over the Garden Wall on Hulu. 10 minute short episodes of a miniseries. Very good fall and halloween vibes. Creative and fun animation.
I just watched The English on amazon. Way better than I expected it to be. It's a pretty gritty western with a lot of thought and heart. 6 Episodes if you are looking for something to watch.
