Started watching Deadwood for the first time. Great cast, very good writing. I love a good fictional story blended with lots of actual historical events.
In that same vein, I highly recommend Babylon Berlin, a German detective show set in the 1920s/Weimar Republic. I learned a lot about those interwar years that I didn't know.
Deadwood is one of my all-time favorite shows. Al Swearengen is one of the greatest characters ever created, IMO, and Ian McShane was amazing as him.
After you're done with Deadwood, I would also highly recommend Justified, if you haven't seen it yet. It takes place in modern times (but backwoods) Kentucky, with Timothy Olyphant playing a similar role as he did in Deadwood (US Marshal rather than Sheriff). It also has a similar cast of incredibly compelling, well-written/acted characters, and the main antagonist, Boyd Crowder, played by Walton Goggins, also ranks up there with Al Swearengen.
I've seen some pieces of Justified, and it's come very highly recommended from both my wife and some friends, so I owe it a proper watch at some point.
I've been catching up on Better Call Saul, finished up the second-to-last season last night. Insane, wonderful, electrifying performances from Jonathan Banks as Mike and Tony Dalton as Lalo. I can't stop watching it or thinking about it which is a huge problem because I'm supposed to be working on programmer stuff...
Oh buddy, just you wait. Believe it or not it gets even better.
Was visiting family and caught an episode of All Creatures Great and Small in the new version.
It's fun and funny and the scenery is beautiful
I finally watched Only Murders in the Building Season 3. It was good. I don’t think this show will ever match the quality of the first season, but I at least thought it was an improvement over the second season.
Selena Gomez’s lack of acting chops was really noticeable to me this time around. Distractingly so, I don’t know if it’s because Meryl Streep was in this season that it made it more obvious but I feel bad for her.
Viewers were able to figure out whodunit via telegraphs in season 1. That was absolutely not the case for seasons 2 and 3, which were total ass-pulls because the show sacrificed the mystery elements for character/story elements. The show has heart for days, though, and I hope it can re-capture the season 1 magic.
I just finished watching Class of '07. It wasn't as suspenseful or dark as Yellowjackets, not as empathetic or thought provoking as The Wilds and not as funny as it thought it was, but I'd still give it a sold C+. The tone is all over the place, and not in a balanced way where the darkness and the comedy really enhance each other, just in a chaotic way that made me feel like it was tough to get my bearings. Despite that, there are some solid laughs, and some of the character progression is reasonably satisfying. If you need something on to watch out of the corner of your eye while you do the dishes, or if you liked The Wilds and Yellowjackets and just want to watch a worse version to transition to another genre then this is a great option, but if you've got a long to-watch list then maybe give this a pass.
The Traitors (UK) wrapped tonight --- great game show! Its basically a simplified Mafia/Werewolf. You've got three traitors and twenty-two faithful. They all do games during the day to earn money for the pot. Each day they either do a roundtable where they vote for who they think is a traitor or the traitors meet at night and pick someone to murder.
Its fun and its neat to see different strategies at play. There's always the sappy bullshit. There's also an after show called Traitors: Uncloaked, which is a nice little recap with some interviews.
I don't normally watch shows like this, but its fun.
