I've been watching Criminal Minds from the beginning with my wife over the last year or so. We've watched some of it before and It's a bit of a comfort show where you can doze off and not really miss anything. Through the seasons you learn the formula pretty well but also get to love/hate the characters in light of their often pretty clumsy stereotypical written personas. So I wasn't really expecting much when we started season 16 and it was subtitled "Evolution". Come to think of it I didn't even gave it a thought - it was just another season.
I was pleasantly surprised! The writing and production in general is vastly improved and it seems like they're using the shorter seasons (10 episodes compared to the previous 20ish episodes) to focus on one ongoing case which really works well. Some of these actors aren't as bad as I thought and it's amazing how good writing can improve a performance. Just to hear Rossi shout "fuck" in the first episode was so impactful and liberating and I love it. It's grittier, more daring and it really suits the show and this "evolution" was necessary IMO if it was to continue because the old formula was getting tiring.
My point is the continuation of this long running show really seems justified with this new approach and it surprised me quite a bit. It also made me wonder what would happen if they did this with other similar crime shows from that era that suffers from stagnation or just ran out it's course.
My wife and I have watched the whole (original) series front to back 3 times. It is a really great show to just have on. The plots get extremely whacky toward the end but it's never so bad that you want to turn it off.
I'm 5 episodes into Alien: Earth and so far, so good. If you're a fan of the IP or Noah Hawley, this has both.
Does it have Hawley's typical "wtf was that" element?
I think it's less obvious than some of his other projects. I think he's more constrained by this IP than in anything else he's worked on. It hasn't had much humor at all.
I just wanna say that firing Michael Longfellow from SNL is bullshit and I'm boycotting the show from now on. I'm sure Lorne will be deeply sorry for losing a steady source of illegal downloads.
Longfellow was one my favorites and a prime candidate for Weekend Update. Oh and Jane Wickline is still on the show. WTF?
My wife and I bought Alaska Daily S1 on Apple this week for $5. It is actually very good so far, and well worth watching. It is also very different than usual ABC offerings. Which is why is probably contributed to it’s cancellation. It seems more at home as an Apple TV or Hulu series.
I highly recommend.
I never saw Stargate Atlantis. It is has a rough edge here and some hacking there, but I really enjoy it.
That's the first Stargate series I ever saw. I'm old enough to have watched the entire original run of SG1 but missed it even in syndication so I started with SG:A right after it initially concluded, finished that, and worked my way back.
I personally love it quirks and all. Same with SG1 of course. Rodney's character growth is great and the sense of adventure the show creates has been rarely recaptured by much since except maybe The Expanse. IMO of course.
neat episode of Strange New Worlds tonight. This season has been odd, but its good they're trying some new things that will likely benefit trek in the future. They haven't all hit, but this one did for me.
