Mychal got famous online as a local children's librarian talking about how everyone could experience library joy, from "library kids" to "library adults" with a strong focus on how the library is for everyone, including homeless folks. He's also gone through his own mental health struggles and been open about that. He was hired as PBS's resident librarian a bit ago and I'm thrilled this is where that led for him.

It's probably funded a bit by the local station that owns it and private donations - if you've ever heard a sponsor list on NPR or PBS they'll say "paid for by (a grant from).... " So the CPB provided a lot of those grants but not all of them, and local stations have increased their fundraising, some successfully, which lets the local stations "buy" airing rights to shows like Reading Rainbow. (PBS may work differently than NPR which I'm more familiar with so if I'm wrong feel free to correct me)

Molly of Denali and Skillsville were both killed already. I can only hope that Reading Rainbow gets a few more people to care.

Unfortunately I can see animation being much more expensive than something like reading rainbow - especially since they're focusing on some celebrity children's book authors which makes me think they're getting some additional support from those celebrities, maybe?

Folks in my circle care, it's a very drop in the bucket situation, so hopefully yeah this motivates the millennials without kids to vibe with some nostalgia.

It's kind of a weird situation. The umbrella funding from CPB has been cut, which does put PBS and others in risk of shutting down. But PBS still has other avenues to bring in funding like private investment (ew), donations, or product sales. If management at PBS can keep things afloat without the funding from the government, then that means they still have shows to run which means they still have choices like these to make.

If anything, if they're going to be strapped for cash, rebooting Reading Rainbow and planning some merch along with it could be an attempt to bring in more income.

This is genuinely good news, I'm not familiar with Mychal but he sounds like a great choice for this. I can't wait to see what he does.

For purely selfish reasons, I would have loved to see LeVar Burton return to the role because I grew up on his original run and him also hosting it for my own children would be very cute, I guess?...

That being said, Mychal seems like an awesome guy and my wife was really excited about him being the host, so that's enough to convince me he'll do well :)

Levar is hosting a Trivial Pursuit game show! Second season comes next year! But I think the older episodes still hold up for today's kids too.
