I kind of wish they had just aired this without a big media push to give them a season or two to iron out the kinks and find their voice etc THEN do the big push if its working out.

The name "Saturday Night Live UK" itself attracts lots of attention from traditional media. Even more so shortly after SNL 50. I don't think maintaining a low profile is an option here.

That said, the sketches I've seen so far aren't too bad -- especially for their first episode. I hope they can land it.

SNL US constantly puts out epic sketches, both live and prerecorded, that do very well on YouTube. Every post about SNL has comments about how it is completely unfunny because they usually only watch the political sketches. The SNL format is as strong as ever for those who appreciate sketch comedy and digital shorts. So that could totally work. Would I want the musical acts? Not really, I often changed the channel in the 1990s, and now I just skip them. I find most acts fake and overproduced nowadays. The political openings are incredibly boring, but they give a lot of visibility to SNL. I understand why they exist, but it is an automatic skip for me, too. I sure hope SNL UK don't have those.

EDIT: it is live on "Sky Premiere" (UK channel) right now. I do have that channel on Stremio, but my superlegal streaming is struggling.

Yeah, US SNL's political sketches have almost always been pretty damn cringey and eye-roll inducing to me too. But the UK has a long history of much more high-brow and deeper, less polarizing political commentary, comedy, and satire, so I'm personally not too worried about them potentially including the occasional bit of that in SNL UK.
