TV Tuesdays Free Talk
Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
First episode of Watchmen was left me hungry for more.
Well I just finished up the first season of Mindhunter, been meaning to watch it for a while so glad I finished it. Really enjoyed what I saw from that season, was really well written and just put together. And will probably start watching the second season soon along with another civ 6 game to play along with it.
First episode of Watchmen I thought was pretty good, and has made me go back and start rereading the Graphic Novel. Feel like I've forgotten many things from the GN that will be important for the show, or minor easter eggs at minimum.
Also Mr. Robot is still amazing, and I can't support watching that show enough. Can't wait to see how this all gets wrapped up.
Oooohh, I didn't realize Mr. Robot was back. I know what I'm doing tonight.
With you on all the shows here, but care to elaborate how Civ 6 relates here? Caught me off guard.
Random side comment really, Mindhunter is one of those shows that I seem to enjoy watching the most while playing a game and atm Civ 6 is that. Actually just finished Season 2 of Mindhunter yesterday in a large binge, stayed up till 3 in the morning finishing it up. So guess I need to browse Netflix for my next binging show
Gotcha. I found that I need to distract myself at points during the show because of how intense it is. Particularly the episode in the beginning of season two where the kid who got away from the killer is describing the events in detail while sitting in the back of the van. Chilling. I had to open up a crossword so I wasn't visualizing all of the details.
Is your reasoning similar?
Yeah, pretty much. Season 2 was really tough with that long ongoing saga with the kids. Even worse is that final card saying the cases never got solved. That stuff is really tough. Kinda sad we didn't get more of Wendy but I think it definitely made up for it.
A friend of mine has been staying with me for the past few weeks and he isn't much of a tv guy. I am a bit of a connoisseur myself, so I've taken the opportunity to introduce him to a few of my favorites, which he has really enjoyed. I figure this is as good of place as any to share what we've seen so far (he's out of work, so there's a lot). I can't recommend these shows enough, and I'm happy to talk about them if you've seen them.
Succession
Veep
Peep Show
Barry
Atlanta
Fargo
Party Down
Curb Your Enthusiasm
On deck we have The Wire, The Americans, Sopranos, and Fleabag. I can't wait for him to meet Omar. Personally, I'm gonna check out Watchmen tonight and sometime this month I plan on checking out The Good Place.
I've been meaning to check out Succession, but other than that almost all the shows you listed are on my favorites list as well!
I bet you'd like The Righteous Gemstones and Bored to Death too, if you haven't seen them already.
Seen both, and enjoyed them. I still need to check out the Gemstones finale. Let me know what you think of Succession. It's probably my favorite show since Fargo or Breaking Bad. It's the perfect blend of drama and comedy - something Adam Mckay seems to be getting really good at (he doesn't write it, but he is the producer).
I've been watching "Crime and Punishment" - this is a documentary about the English criminal justice system. There have been 6 episodes so far and most of them have been inside prisons. It's a difficult watch: we see dangerous men stuck inside a system that isn't doing enough to progress them into rehabilitation, and we see staff who want to work psychologically and relationally to help these people but being unable to because of the crumbling state of the system. The episode on indeterminate sentences for public protection (an unjust sentence that is no longer handed out, but is still in place for many people) was particularly hard to watch. Those men have to prove that they are no longer a danger to other people, and proving a negative is hard. I strongly recommend this programme.
I guess it's available via VPN or torrents. https://www.channel4.com/programmes/crime-and-punishment
I've also been watching Anne With an E (or just Anne) and it's very good for a children's show. It's a bit harsh for younger children, but it shows trauma pretty well I think.
I'm grinding through S02 of True Detective (I don't enjoy it; I didn't enjoy the first season) and I really don't understand why people like this show. American Crime was better, even if it was a bit wonky in places.
My wife and I watched the first season of True detective because so many people recommended it to us. Neither of enjoyed it and we never bothered with later seasons.
That's some serious dedication if you finished the whole season without enjoying it. I thought is was alright but I'm also not going to watch any other seasons so I get where you're coming from.
I think we just kept waiting for it to get better both thinking the other liked it. It’s not like it was terrible, but it just wasn’t good either.
Anyone else watch The Deuce? It is so sad and gut-wrenching, and I will miss it dearly after the series finale next week.
I'm a few weeks behind, but the last episode was pretty sad and gut-wrenching. Good to know that there is still plenty of sadness to come, I guess.
Plenty of sadness is an understatement.
I actually watched the last three episodes after posting that comment. I believed you, but I didn't think they would be able to top the first big shock, but damn they really went for it. Wow.
I signed up for a month of Amazon Prime. There are some shows there I've been wanting to watch for some time, and now that we're in between seasons of all the shows I follow on Netflix, this seemed like a good time.
The Boys
I've never really liked superheroes, but I do quite enjoy alternative takes on the genre. And I really liked this one. I haven't read the comic, but I think I will once the show concludes, avoiding it until then to avoid spoilers. At the moment I have no idea how close they stick to the source material.
Watchmen seems like an obvious inspiration, but instead of focusing on retired heroes, this show focuses on a group of civilians and a newly recruited hero. I think if you enjoyed the 2009 Watchmen film, you'll enjoy this show.
Fleabag
I'm about 4 episodes in, and I've laughed aloud several times. It's a very funny slice-of-life sitcom. I'm not usually a fan of British sitcoms, but I can recommend this one.
The Grand Tour
Basically Top Gear, and I'm fine with that. This is one of those shows where you can jump into an episode at any point, making it the perfect show for playing in the background while doing other things. I kinda miss the celebrity interviews from Top Gear. Not that I'm a huge fan of the whole interview-a-celebrity-about-the-thing-they're-currently-selling genre of television, but Clarkson was great at it.
House
I'm always rewatching a show, and now that I have Prime, I'm rewatching House. He's not actually a very good doctor, is he? He usually gives the wrong diagnoses three times or so before landing on the correct one. Still a fun and suspenseful show though.
When House was originally airing, there was a doctor that would post reviews of the medicine in each episode. I found them very interesting to read during my latest re-watch.

I also loved Fleabag and enjoyed The Boys. If you're looking for more stuff to watch on Amazon Prime, I'd recommend Patriot.
Oh, that's neat! I read Scott's comments on the first three episodes, and he didn't actually object as wildly as I expected. He mostly seemed surprised at how understaffed the hospital seems, with the doctors themselves running all the tests.
Thanks for the recommendation. :-)
Anyone else been watching the show Cake on FXX? It just started in September, there's five episodes so far. Each episode is a series of shorts, some of them animated, some of them live action. The animated bits are kind of similar to TripTank or Monkey Dust.
