Not tv related, but I just needed to share this somewhere. On Black Friday I tried to go watch House of Gucci, the theater double booked our tickets (in reality the other family had the wrong time but threw a tantrum) and because we were the reasonable party, we went home. I tried going today to a different theater to go watch it. Maybe 15 minutes in I go pee. I come back security says that someone complained that I’ve been going up and down and up and down, and that I need to leave and they would give me a refund. The person that complained was an old white guy (I’m a young brown guy). The lower level manager tries to give me a refund, the machine won’t work so they give me a pass instead. I try to get a ticket for the next showtime and they tell me that I’m temporarily banned from the theater because of the complaint. They bring out their senior manager, an old white guy, and he tells me to fuck off and that he’s taking their word against mine.

So I called customer service, I get my refund and file a formal complaint against the theater and the manager accusing them of racism. And I’m never going back (this is a theater I’ve been going to since I was a child).

AND I REALLY WANT TO WATCH HOUSE OF GUCCI.

Sadly, one of the few places I see racism dying is something I’d also like to see go away: the car mod community. But I do love fast and furious, to bring it back, almost, to TV.

I finally finished with Squid Game, @cfabbro! It was the first thing I tackled after finishing up my work for Timasomo.

All told, I really enjoyed the series. Great pacing and suspense, very clever writing and setup, and its resonant moments hit way harder than I was expecting them to.

The fight in the last episode was absolutely brutal both narratively and aesthetically. I was genuinely concerned for the actors, as some of those hits looked real.

Also, I didn't love the reveal of Oh Il-Nam as the guy behind it all, but I loved the scene between him and Gi-Hun watching the man on the sidewalk. More really smart writing.

Yeah, I didn't love the Il-Nam reveal either... but not because it wasn't clever, well acted, or believable. It was. But because it felt like a massive betrayal, since I had felt so bad for him before that, and even cried my eyes out at his "death" in Ep6. I suppose that's precisely the point of it though, since it allowed us to feel what Gi-Hun felt in that moment too. And I honestly wouldn't have blamed Gi-Hun if he had strangled the old bastard to death for real, at that point. :P

p.s. There are some really cool details in the show that hinted at Il-Nams real role, that I missed on first viewing, and no doubt you probably did too. I only learned of them from watching "Things you missed" videos about the show on YouTube. But if you go back and watch certain parts in slow-mo, it turns out that Il-Nam was never really in any danger.

In Red/Green Light when the camera was looking at him, he had a digital outline around him like all the other players, but no green or red filter over him like the rest did, so the system was intentionally ignoring him. In the sugar honeycomb game, even if he had failed he probably could have just walked away as if he had succeeded. In the night time brawl, since he knew it was coming, he climbed up to that super high bunk before it even started and hid there, until he finally decided to let Front Man know he wanted the "game" to end. And in tug-of-war, as the camera pans past him when they are lying on the ground after the win, it briefly shows he has no locks on his wrist straps, unlike the other players.

And it turns out he may have not even "peed" his pants either. When the guard tears the sheets back, you can clearly see a water bottle beside his head. He probably did that just so he could get taken away to find out from Front Man what the alarm was for... but Gi-Hun fucked that up by being too nice a guy, risking his life trying to protect Il-Nam from the guards, and refusing to abandon him in that situation.
