    On one hand I agree. I feel like people really over estimate how "smart" it is. But on the other hand can't a new interface be a revolution in its own right? I mean in a certain sense the internet...

    But then you’re back to using as a nice interface for existing data. Very useful and sure to get adoption. Not a revolution.

    The common example in Japanese is 悔しい(kuyashii). The literal English translation is usually, frustrating, vexing, regrettable. But if I try to translate the definition given in my Japanese-Japanese dictionary, it's: The irritating regret felt when losing a match, failing, or being disgraced. That's a subset of what frustrating means in English, you can't say an itch that won't go away is 悔しい.

    That's why I feel like always relying on a translation doesn't give you a good sense of what things really mean.

    Is this a good way to learn? If you could learn a foreign language by seeing it side by side with a translation for long enough, wouldn't most people who have watched subtitled anime for 10+ years...

    It's similar in Japanese, with the day of the week sometimes being shortened to the initial kanji. 木曜日-> 木, 木 on it's own is tree, so outside of the context of days it would not mean Thursday.

    I wouldn't recommend starting out with children's books or manga. Children's books use a lot of onomatopoeia which isn't very easy to remember and also isn't that helpful for other content. It takes a lot of time to look up words you don't know from manga, and whatever you start with, you'll be doing that a lot, so it's a big concern.

    I'd recommend starting with an easy, slice of life anime with JP subtitles and a texthooker (instructions here). The anime I had the most success with at the beginning was Shoujo shuumatsu ryokou, most of it is just a dialogue between two characters and it's pretty easy to understand, while also being very interesting. Whatever native content you start with will be tough.

    I'm studying Japanese, and I just hit 2000 kanji in my anki deck today!

    I'm pretty much just using the method at https://learnjapanese.moe. At this point my daily routine is to do my anki reviews, and then read visual and light novels, looking up words and grammar that I don't know (the later is pretty rare), and making anki cards from it.

    When I started learning Japanese I thought I'd be watching more anime, but now I don't watch it as much as I used to. It's uncomfortable to pause and look up words, and I've found that difference in enjoyment between original Japanese version and translated version is much bigger for novels compared to anime, which does make sense.

    I practice output on Japanese message boards and chat rooms, but I hadn't really spoken at all until recently, when I found a Japanese person who wanted to play video games with me. Surprisingly they can understand me relatively well, but even I can hear how bad I sound, so I've started shadowing. I don't do it every day though.

    I have one with an ARM core, and it's cool but I haven't found too much use for it. The keyboard is not big enough to type on with ten fingers and the screen is only tall enough for a few lines of code. One neat part is that you can switch out the 'core', so I'll probably get a RISC one to have an excuse to play with it more.

    Obviously it would be better if some developers felt compelled to start learning to maintain the project today, some people decided to port it to new reddit, some people felt like adding new features, etc. It's sad that it has to be put in maintenance mode.

    That said, a lot of open source seems to be about scratching one's own itch. I still believe that there are users who know enough about rest apis and browser extensions and care just enough about their favorite features, so that the core will keep working for at least a few more years, even if every now and then it breaks for a few days.

    I've always heard that blockchains are explicitly not private, and that's supposed to be an advantage; everybody can see who owns what. There are projects like monero that are more privacy focused.

    I don't think that you understand their point. The view that the people running the trial are pure evil and the view that the result of the trial is legally correct aren't contradictory.
