The main alternative reddit has settled on is Octopi Launcher which I've been using on/off for the better part of a year now.

    Pros:
    Constantly in development
    Pretty customisable
No ads or tracking (or paid version)

    Cons:
UX just feels off I don't know how to describe it but it feels still like a work in progress

This is reminding me of the steam machines line that flopped pretty hard. I thought at the time that Valve should have made one as the "standard" one to point people to.

Hopefully this gets the same love the steam deck gets, and it gets priced reasonably.

Yeah I'm of a similar opinion. Lando, on his day, is still clear of Oscar in terms of speed, racecraft, and tyre management in my opinion. However, as the pressure builds for Lando to deliver I can't help but feel that those days are going to be fewer and further between as Oscar just keeps banging out solid races. However, if this race does go down to Abu Dhabi I'll be happy no matter who wins it (although I'd slightly prefer Lando over Oscar).

I think there's a nonzero chance that Max (or even George) could end up stealing the championship if McLaren fall back a bit in pace and have some more collisions.

    I'll try to explain Arch

Arch Linux as a distro which is very flexible and user customisable, with the distro not even having any window management/desktop environment preinstalled. This has made it a favourite among tinkerers and people who like to customise their experience heavily.

The only way to install Arch (until relatively recently) was a fairly manual hands-on installation compared to your more "friendly" flavours like Ubuntu/Fedora/Mint. This ended up with Arch gaining a reputation of being one of the "hardcore" distros but it was more approachable than gentoo/linux from scratch so it got the large share of gatekeepy-elitists. "I use Arch btw" then cropped up as a meme making fun of these people.

Nowadays, Arch is easier to install than ever with the archinstall scripts that come bundled in the installation image and the elitists either have matured out of it or are now even more of a minority.

The Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky Trilogy

For those not in the know, the Trails series is a very long running serialised JRPG franchise known for its worldbuilding and narrative. The series is 13 games deep (with at least 3-4 more to go depending on who you ask) and pretty much every game in the series requires knowledge from every previous game. The series also has had a fairly troubled localisation effort which made getting into the series as an English player a bit difficult until a couple of years ago where finally every game had an official English localisation and it more or less got caught up to the Japanese releases.

After watching most of a 4 and a half hour video on the first game, which I've owned for a while, I took the plunge into this beloved series. I ended up beating the first game in around 4 days, and immediately bought the second (while playing I had planned to pick up the second during the upcoming summer sale). The first 3 games in the series form the 'Liberl Arc' and focuses on events in the country of Liberl in the continent the games are set in.

    The World/Characters

This is by far the most captivating part of the games for me. Estelle, the main character for the first two games, is a very strong character from minute 0 after she dropkicks an injured child for complaining too much. Joshua, the other lead character for the first two, is also a well done character and his situation in the second game kept me hooked throughout the whole playtime. I could gush about the characters in these games for probably longer than a post deserves, but I will say that Olivier is the GOAT and I will not hear otherwise.

Your party throughout the games isn't a constant either, especially in the first game. Outside of the final dungeon, you can't select members for your party as the characters come and go depending on their personal situation. This goes away partially in the second game, and more or less fully in the 3rd. The games also do react to who's in your party and whether they'd actually say anything in situations.

The world itself also feels very realised. A lot of the questions you'd ask about the world and how it functions the game either tells you or shows you. And the game does take its time setting up everything, but it pays off in the long run.

    The Combat

So, I'm not the greatest fan of turn/menu based combat. It ends up being something I tolerate rather than something I enjoy about the games. I find that most times it slows the game down as it takes you out of the world to then fight.

The combat in these games are based on an actual grid, with many moves pushing/pulling their targets around. The games also have a visible turn list, where the bigger the action a character takes, the longer until their next action. So, casting a big spell will take a long time to execute, and then take a while until their next action. The counterbalance is that the big spell might one shot the pack of enemies you're fighting. I do generally like the additions to this compared to something more standard (Atlus games are what I'm comparing them to in my mind), and it gives you more to plan/ strategise with.

You progress your character in 2 main ways - Levels and Orbments. Orbments work kinda similar to Materia in FFVII where you slot Orbments into a grid and then the game uses some arcane calculations (that there is an in game wiki for) to figure out what spells (called arts) you get. Slot some big red Orbments, you get a lot of fire arts - simple as. Levels get you other abilities called Crafts. Crafts don't take any time to use, but will deal less damage compared to Arts. These have a nice trade off, but I did find the Orbment system hard to figure until about halfway through the 2nd game.

    The Other Bits

These games initially came out in 2004-2007 using pretty old tech, so the graphics aren't the greatest compared to what they could be. However, they're serviceable enough and during some of the cutscenes I was genuinely hyped to see fancy PNGs doing anime battles.

The games run fine (as expected), although I did have a weird issue with the 2nd and 3rd games crashing when my PC switched from light to dark mode in the evening.

These games also have no voice acting, but there is a mod which imports the Japanese dub from the PSP/Vita versions of the games and I'd highly recommend that.

I'd honestly recommend these to anyone with a passing interest in JRPGS, they are also pretty cheap too, you can get the whole trilogy on discount for around £50.

If the graphics or gameplay do turn you off, they are remaking the first game in their current engine, with an English dub to boot. You might have to wait a while if you want to play the whole trilogy this way, and from my experience once you roll credits on the first you are going to instantly be purchasing and downloading the second.

Sadly, I'm busy for the first few hours of the race so any attempt from me this year is over before it could even start. One day...

I also can't help but feel that the back to back to back scheduling of the 24 hours events is going to be very gruelling for any of the teams that're competing in at least 2 of these. As a viewer though, I'm all for it. It makes June feel like a special month.

It's good, I don't think Justin's missed at all with any Bon Iver album yet. It feels like a culmination of all the sounds of the previous albums.

As a McLaren fan, they definitely screwed themselves out of a 1-2 here by letting their drivers fight. If Lando/McLaren are serious about the WDC challenge, they need to be telling Oscar he can't be doing that lap 1 (I don't think he did anything wrong if they were allowed to race/fight, Lando left the gap and Oscar went for it). Their car had the pace seeing them both just bang out fastest laps.

As a Leclerc fan, what a race to win. The two most important ones for him and he smashes them both. Props to Carlos for seemingly saying the 1 stop could work, and for holding up both McLarens to the point they couldn't catch Charles.

Red Bull seem to be in the doldrums for the moment. If you had told me at the start of the year max wouldn't win a race for now 6 races straight I would have not believed you at all. We might see a resurgence at Baku, but Singapore has never been strong for Max.

For the WDC 62 points with 8 races and 3 sprints left seems like a task for Lando, but if Red Bull continue like this I think he'll clinch it. WCC seems like a lock for McLaren at this point, but Ferrari may even end up knocking Red Bull down to third by the end of the year.

    What a year it's been.

The big parties heavily benefit from the current system, so they're likely to not want to change it, and the small parties who it might benefit aren't able to push it through. We did have a Referendum on an alternative vote back in 2011 pushed through by the Lib Dems who were in coalition with the Conservatives at the time. I was 11 years old at the time so I don't remember what the campaigns fully were like but the vote ended in a resounding "no" for changing the system.

Final Fantasy XIV (Steam Link) is a definite slow burn for me, particularly the main story of the base game. It's very slow to start off with, with the main story really picking up around levels 30-40. This does mean for the first perhaps 30 hours the story feels like it's spinning its wheels. However, I think pretty much everyone who didn't get filtered out by the base game then praises the story of the expansions for very good reason.

I'm all for the vote at 16, but that might mainly be due to the Brexit vote occurring when I was 16 and feeling like I wasn't getting a say despite the fact I was going to on average spend more time in the post-Brexit UK than most of the people pushing and voting for it.

I'm not sure the age the vote should be brought forward to but 16 is definitely where I'd start it out at.

Super happy for Norris, feels like this has been a long time coming, since at least 2021. I'm hoping the updates help McLaren fight for wins at more tracks (Another Norris win at Silverstone would be cracking), We'll see at Imola and Monaco.

It might turn out to be an interesting year after all if the Ferrari and McLaren updates prove fruitful.

So, RE: characters showing up randomly in thunder junction

From what I've read about this set there's two reasons why -

First, is that one of the themes of the set is "villains" to match the cowboy/outlaw theme of the plane. They decided to make the plane empty pre-omenpaths to avoid any allegory to how the native americans were treated by colonisers, which has resulted in the set feeling a bit like "hey remember this minor bad guy from X set? They're here too now in a cowboy hat and wearing spurs!" to actually give the set enough cards.

The Second is (which I read somewhere but can't find again) that they're going to be doing crossover sets between planes about once a year. And with their release schedule it's got to be in a standard legal set as the rest of the calendar is now being taken up with Universes Beyond or rereleases and they got rid of core sets because they weren't selling well enough I believe.

I think I'm going to steal the year of "Focus" from you!

I've been struggling with what I think is ADHD for the whole year, keeping myself on track and task for things has become rather challenging (I'm procrastinating from many thing while I'm writing this) and the UK healthcare system for all its benefits has a several month waiting list for an ADHD diagnosis.

I have so many things I want to do or try, but they're stuck in limbo until I decide that I'm going to hyperfocus on them for a week or two and then drop them until they strike my interest again.

Going into 2024 I'm looking at (hopefully) a bit of a career change, and to get some long-term things rolling that I've been putting off for however long. Between the ADHD diagnosis, and getting myself to get these things started I hope that's going to fulfill what I've defined as the criteria in my head (but haven't written down). Also to catch up on my game backlog that's slowly getting longer and longer. That's a tertiary goal for the year though.

Just be warned with Jedi Survivor that it's still rather poorly performing on most hardware even after the updates (at least as of update 7).
