I haven't approached it the way you're talking about, but have you looked into AdGuardHome? I run two instances, one on a Pi as primary DNS for the house and another on my main server as backup. The primary use case for AGH is ad-blocking for the entire network. But it has quite a few controls regarding blocking specific services, blacklisting, and whitelisting based off device/IP (I think you'll have to use it as DHCP to do per IP function though. Without it all traffic looks like it's coming from your gateway IP regardless of who or what device. It has some services you can block outright instead of trying to catch and blacklist all the various domains a service might use. Like my spouse asked that I block TikTok to help with her addiction that she sometime falls into with it. And that's worked pretty well. Might not be exactly what you're looking for though.

I capture anything that seems vaguely important. Then I worry about organizing it later. A recent example is keeping track of projects I'm working on with my server and the various apps I'm self hosting. I'll read about them, and jot down the highlights. Then implement what I've learned and organize later. Adding tags and or back links as needed. I do similar at work. All meeting notes, new software deployments, other projects get captured then organized. I found myself worrying too much about "which folder this should go in?" To the point that I'd lost that train of thought.

I think the important thing is to learn the basics of what Obsidian can do, then find which workflow and organization works best for you. The book is a good starting point. But ultimately I'm not using it in the same way the author prescribes, and that's fine, and I'm pleased with how it's going so far.

    • Aegis - best 2FA app out there not attached to the big companies

    • Miniflux - my favorite of the selfhosted RSS readers

    • Wallabag - Read-it-Later and partner in crime to Miniflux

    • Bitwarden - I love the app for managing my passwords of course but also for random secure notes.

    • Quillpad - Google Keep clone that syncs to Nextcloud and supports Markdown

    • Seafile - super fast file syncing between my server, and all of my devices.

    • Immich - self hosted Google Photos replacement. It's very good.

I guess that is my main thing at least with Seafile. If the data is encrypted and behind a complex password and 2FA authentication, what use would that data be to any snoopers? But maybe I'm not thinking big picture enough. From my understanding the metadata is not encrypted so file size, names, and some other stats could be seen, but not the contents.

Since you and @Octofox asked a similar question...
as far as updates and patches are concerned, unraid has notifications built in for both the OS itself, any installed plugins, and any docker containers installed. I am emailed when there are updates to any of the those items and generally will immediately fire off the update. With the exception of the OS updates because I need to stop all dockers, spin down the drives, then apply the update. Otherwise it might have an unclean shutdown and trigger a parity check with takes about 15 hrs on the 14TB parity drive I have.

I am still learning, so ignore any subtext or pretense of the above paragraph that might make you think I'm super confident. Its why I ask. I wanted outside perspective so thank you for the input. All valid concerns.

Part of the reason for wanting to have it open to a user outside of my network is to let my family use it as part of their 3-2-1 backup strategy to meet the offsite criteria. Unless there's a way to let them VPN to just that container to move data around on their account, I may have to just stand it up long enough for them to authenticate with Seafile, load their data, then shut down outside access. I certainly wouldn't want them using or accessing any of my other containers though.

I have a server running Unraid at home. I have ~20 docker containers running at the moment with almost all of them only available within my local network. I just stood up an instance of Seafile on the server to act as a google drive replacement. Still in the early test phase before I commit to throwing important stuff on there. I have my domain proxied through Cloudflare so none of my local ports are exposed to the internet. Seafille has complicated passwords set for admin and user accounts (generated with Bitwarden, hot damn I love that app). I also enabled 2FA on each account. I know that I can further clamp it down using some of Cloudflare's extra access controls but in my admittedly limited experience, those all cause issues getting an app to authenticate with the service. Web apps don't have this issue of course.

So am I ok with this setup? I can encrypt the data before uploading easily as it's a built in feature of Seafile. Or would it be better to just run with local only and run a VPN to access when I'm outside?

I figure just about any effort along these lines I trust more than Google with my data. But I may be overconfident in that perhaps. I'm still learning the ropes with Linux and self-hosting in general.

And while I haven't found another single book or series that grabbed me in the same way, I still read every day and have tried non-fiction, older scifi, fantasy, and even one book on organizational strategies.

I tried Photoprsim and they didn't even have editing at all. An now of course some features are behind a paywall.

Immich is the closest so far. Maybe I need to look at a dedicated microserver just for that.

Not really any figures on how fast things heat or whether heating is more uniform over gas, but just a lot of "I love my gas" style stuff.

A fair observation. I can only speak anecdotally. I've owned 2 electric stoves and lived in many apartments where they were the default. They were all slower to heat up. In particular cast iron skillets, which is my preferred cooking vessel 99% of the time. That said, I understand the induction models to be really quick to heat up. I just am not in the market for a new one.

I wonder what contribution natural a gas furnace has to this air quality talk. That's the most common heating fuel where I live and we have pretty harsh winters.

I'll echo the comments about Google Takeout. I'm still working through my own migration. That being said I can't seem to find a good photos replacement. Immich is good but takes up a good chunk of my system resources on my admittedly old server. And nextcloud memories is fantastic, but tied to Nextcloud and that runs even worse on my server, so for now, it's out too.

I'm not going to claim I'm not getting any fumes or other harmful stuff because I don't know and I don't have the equipment to measure that output.

I like to char peppers on the open flame or warm up tortillas right in the grate. I'm not going to switch it out if it still works though.
