Reminds me a little of the alliance between Germany and Japan in WW2. Like didn't Germany and Japan both ultimately have the vision to conquer one another?

I'll have to report back as I'm only about a chapter in. As I'm interested in both science and "woo-woo" stuff, I'm always trying to separate the possible (yet unexplained) from the total snake oil. Or to understand how the phantoms of consciousness can produce religious experiences or faulty perceptions of "woo-woo" happenings.

I interpret that to mean the sample recordings themselves are only saved locally, but the metadata on tone, content, transcription (?) are fair game for transmission.

I just started Rupert Sheldrake's Science Set Free, which is an analysis of dogma in science and how science is conducted in reality (under constraints by grants, peer pressure, limited thinking etc). It's nice, it's clear, and it's not anti-science. Mostly encouraging further investigating scientific taboos and assumptions.

Interesting, not a familiar character to me, but I think I may be interested in this series. Anyone have a good suggestion for an entry point? Looks like there's quite a few books.

If it was opt-in and reframed, some users would have chosen to allow the affiliate reference links for Brave, but now everyone is going to be forever suspicious that Brave is coding in some get rich quick scheme that's less obvious than URL manipulation.

I really like this idea! (Never thought I'd be excited about a system for note taking) Stumbling across connections between seemingly disparate things is very exciting, but I've found that even if I do remember a study or article or something from several years ago, it's basically impossible to find the source material again. Either it's been purged from a website, the search engine is flooded with asinine results, or who knows what. I'll probably end up saving a copy of the original material in my system as a permanent storehouse I can reference back to on my note card.

I've tried a couple times to get into table top war games like 40k and Warmachine because I think the worlds and factions (and minis!) are very cool. This trailer makes me want to try again - but I know that feeling of "action" portrayed in the trailer has been largely absent in reality when I play. Most of the game is spent flipping through books looking for some particular sub-rule and sucks out all the momentum.

So more experienced players, does the game get more fun and exciting when you've memorized more of the rules and can stop reading so much?

I've played DnD for many years at this point, and my least favorite campaigns were the ones where the GM or players insist on pausing everything until they scrounge up exactly how much damage a thrown beer bottle will do. It's much more interesting when someone just suggests a number and the game keeps its fluidity.

Another factor to throw into the mix is that US public perceptions of teachers are low. I think some people are willing to take a low-paid, respected position, but you have to be a real martyr to take a low-paid, ill treated position.

I haven't yet seen a study on the quality of a teachers from online schools vs. physical ones, but you can bet there's been a huge jump in the percentage of new teachers coming from online prep.

It was a little unclear if there was an implicit suggestion in the report that alternative certification is sub-par compared to traditional certification programs. I don't necessarily agree with that statement without some further evidence.

From my own perspective (graduating college smack dab in the middle of the recession), people getting even a 40k/year job right after graduation was pretty uncommon. Looking around, most of my peers have taken about 10 years to get to that pay-grade. So, yes, teaching positions are low-paid, but relative to the menial jobs millennials have been trudging through, is it any worse? I'm not so sure.

There was a time I more seriously considered going into game development and working on art assets, but this is a headline I've seen over and over again. Long, stressful hours, meagre pay, and the sword of Damocles always over your head are insane working conditions. I love that people are in the industry for the love of making the games, but I hate seeing them suffer so. I had some cool email conversations with artists from ArenaNet, sad to think they might be caught up in the layoffs after some really fine work.

On a side note: I've found that game artists love getting emails from fans and students who are interested in the industry. I suspect they don't get a lot of individualized attention after working on a game for years(?!?)
