I got the service back when it was still Play Music specifically for the music streaming aspect so we just might not align on this one.

I picked up Play Music like 10 years ago for myself and my sisters which came with YouTube Red or whatever it was called. I used to be a professional musician, and the kiddos are similarly inclined so a music streaming service that allows our friends to post makes sense for our use case. What did they change to the user experience side? I feel like I might be supporting bad practices accidentally at this point based on the comments.

I did have time to consider if the service was worth the change and decided I liked it enough to keep the plan I had. The whole thing seemed reasonable to me but if you're still getting the older pricing, I'm envious!

I'm not sure if it changed, but when I bought into this like 10 years ago Spotify had super shitty service in comparison to Play Music. Since the user experience hasn't changed much and the pricing still seems reasonable I just haven't checked into alternatives.

If the service somehow goes downhill or starts costing more than it's worth to us than of course we will drop it. In its current state, the price went up (my plan was grandfathered from Play Music) a few months ago and it's just something the 6 of us use enough to be worth it.

As far as I can tell there are no geographical limitations, I am generally hundreds of miles from my parents and siblings and they are able to use my subscription. The fact that this happens to also remove ads on YT is just a bonus.
I imagine I listen to 15-20 hours of music a week, and both of my sisters have a similar music addiction. As far as paying the creators, that's Google's end of the bargain. The primary creators in this case are musicians, and generally ones that have a publisher. Metal Blade Records is not letting Google play their artist's music across the world for free so I imagine that's where my money is going on this one, which seems pretty fair to me.

None of them see youtube ads (minor) but can use YT Music on any trip without ads (major). 6 heads with no ads on YouTube or YT Music seems worth it to me but I would love to hear a counter argument.

I do not wish to upset the apple cart, and I'm still acclimating to the new climate. I think as I get more exposure to the community I will be happy to comment more, but this user experience is designed to dip your toes in first to get a good grip on it.
It's the focus on having something to say and that being an open interaction that is both amazing and somewhat demoralising. Despite the fantastic community I have seen I just worry I will be providing useless fluff rather than real conversation on a topic. I'd be happy to hear counterpoints if I am understanding the community interaction wrong.

There is always something you haven't crafted yet or some cooler version of the village you haven't built yet. You can make optimised structures or you can build a nonsense layout to amuse yourself and it all works well in my experience.
The music heavily sells this as well I think. Going out to snag some wood or do some fishing leaves you with that pop over-world theme with some real charm to it.

To add to your list of potential failures of the system, I'd like to add actual identity theft. About 5 years ago, someone stole information on my credit and debit cards from a grocery store. Fortunately I had cash in my apartment for emergencies and was able to wait out the several days it took to replace cards and refund the money (this happened on a Friday).
Even had I not personally had cash, potentially i could borrow it from friends or relatives until new cards are available. It's unlikely that most folks would lend someone their card, or be in a position to do so. I have a hard time seeing how that sort of utility can be replaced in an electronic only system since the system itself is what is compromised.

I would suggest trying Dragonfall or Hong Kong over the original, if you ever decide to go back to it, it is available as a mod for Hong Kong. There are a few User Generated Content modules available if you find yourself liking it, so you can pack in several other stories. I think I got them on GOG for about 2 to 5 bucks a piece, so they're pretty cheap to try out.
Other folks have suggested Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre LUCL. If you do like the fantasy genre I recently picked up Triangle Strategy and loved it as much as those two. FFT and Tactics Ogre can get a little easy towards the middle, whereas Triangle Strategy felt like it stayed pretty even over the course of the game. Each of the characters have unique skills so you can experiment with a pretty wide cast.

The competition is almost entirely working on personal performance since another player cannot really affect your game. So you get to just talk smack and have a beer or two on a nice day whilst messing with your mates.
I feel similar to bowling or billiards in the winter. All of these competitions from a spectator standpoint are much easier to understand and appreciate since you know how bullshit hard what that pro just pulled off is.

It was more wondering aloud if there is a lot of talk and no action like the first anecdote, or the full mic drop like what I had experienced.
The data coming out of this over the next couple years should be terribly interesting I expect.

It may be too new of a modality at this point to confirm.
To respond to your anecdote with my own, last year the company I was working for mandated 3 days per week and my entire department resigned within the month. For reference though, this was a department of principle and lead engineers so the difficulty in finding new jobs was pretty low. I wonder which one of these scenarios has been more common with the RTO push.

Giant meat pies! It's super quick and easy to feed a bunch of people. Takes about 15 mins to prep and 30 or so to bake. Generally if I don't feel like making dough myself, any pizza dough from Pilsbury or whatnot will do. All you need for filling is ground beef/lamb, brown it up and then caramelise some onions/peppers/mushrooms in the remaining fat. Fill out the inside of the dough on a baking sheet, add cheese and Vegeta then wrap it up.
Each one feeds about 10 people and they only cost $7-8 to make on average. Not super great on the calorie side of things but it gets the job done and the lads generally don't leave me with leftovers.
