It's working quite well, even though it does get hot and the fan speeds up quite a bit when running heavy programs.

Wow, that seems like quite a good match! i7 and 32GB RAM does seem quite future proof, and with a good price tag. Business laptops do seem to be the way to go generally.

Thanks for the tip! The Framework Laptop does seem to pave the way when it comes to modularity and repairability. Ideally, I'd like to find something used in order to minimize the energy and material footprint. Unfortunately, the Factory Second and refurbished models do not seem to be available in the EU where I'm at. Will keep an eye out for used models elsewhere though!

I've recently come back to studying German, after having taken a small break for a few months for a new job.

My main form of study is immersion (I recently stumbled across the books of Walter Moers and haven't looked back since) and conversation practice on iTalki.

Nowadays, I try my hardest to only buy tech second-hand and preferably as future proof and modular as possible. My go-to machines are a fully modded Lenovo Thinkpad T430, and a more humble Thinkpad X230, both running Linux (Ubuntu and PopOS respectively). They work just fine for my basic needs (mostly surfing, some occasional streaming and word processing). But they struggle during my conversation lessons on iTalki or Zoom, most of the time either overheating or freezing/stumbling. I realize this might be a Linux problem, but I have also found the web camera and built-in microphone on both machines to be really inadequate for video calls. I gave up using my own laptops for my language lessons over a year ago, and now have resorted to stealing my partners Macbook, which isn't ideal.

Do you have any recommendations for any more recent laptops that would offer a better video conference experience, while offering at least a removable battery? Pricewise it would be great to be find something below €500 used.

AI summary (from Universal Summarizer by Kagi)
    • Researchers at the University of Florida have developed an mRNA cancer vaccine that can rapidly reprogram the immune system to attack glioblastoma, the most aggressive and lethal type of brain tumor.

    • The vaccine uses the patient's own tumor cells to create a personalized vaccine, and a novel lipid particle delivery mechanism to enhance the immune response.

    • In a first-in-human clinical trial with 4 adult patients, the vaccine triggered a rapid and vigorous immune response against the tumor within 48 hours.

    • Preclinical studies in mice and a trial with 10 pet dogs with spontaneous brain tumors also showed the vaccine's ability to reprogram the tumor microenvironment and improve survival.

    • The vaccine aims to overcome the tumor's immunosuppressive effects and allow the activated immune cells to effectively fight the cancer.

    • The researchers plan to expand the clinical trial to include up to 24 adult and pediatric brain cancer patients to further validate the initial findings.

    • The vaccine represents a novel approach to cancer immunotherapy that simultaneously modulates both the innate and adaptive immune responses.

    • The rapid immune activation seen with the vaccine is an important finding, as it suggests the potential to overcome the initial immunosuppression that often limits the success of cancer immunotherapies.

    • The researchers hope the vaccine could be a new paradigm for cancer treatment and potentially synergize with other immunotherapies.

    • The successful translation of results from preclinical animal models to human patients is a significant achievement, highlighting the potential of this mRNA vaccine approach.

Found this to be an interesting article about a novel treatment that uses mRNA-technique to help activate the immune system toward special types of glioblastomas:

In less than 48 hours, we could see these tumors shifting from what we refer to as ‘cold’—immune cold, very few immune cells, very silenced immune response—to ‘hot,’ very active immune response.

Perhaps this has potential to open new doors to future effective cancer treatments, which would be quite exciting. And when powered by AI-implementation, things could maybe progress even faster? I found it to be a fascinating thought.

I'm currently using Navidrome to self-host my music collection, while using DSub to listen on-the-go.

This works very well for most genres, except for the bulk of my music which is classical music. This presents its own host of problems pertaining to cataloguing and using metadata, since there are often multiple recordings of the same musical composition, recorded by multiple conductors with different orchestras and/or soloists. There may also be different instrumental arrangements of the same musical piece. Merely sorting by "Artist" is therefore quite unsatisfactory in this scenario.

Some streaming services have come up with quite satisfying solutions in my experience (notably Apple Music Classical and Idagio), but I am not sure how to go about listening to my own self-hosted classical music.

Is anybody here on Tildes familiar with this organizational problem? I would be very eager to hear how you have tackled this. Is there any self-hosted software more suitable to cataloguing musical collections with extensive metadata?

    Calling all Deadheads on Tildes!

I've listened to the Grateful Dead sporadically throughout the years but never really took a deep dive. The incredible goldmine that is https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead is just waiting, mysterious and silently beckoning... but I have no map of the landscape so the question is, where to begin?

    What are your favorite recordings?

Edit: Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm so eager to listen them all through!
