That’s literally the situation the Ukrainians are in. And they feel like ceasefire is not an option. Considering all the war crimes, I’m not sure their opponent would stick to any rules.

Would you say, the Hamas who attacked Israeli people, are good people?
I don’t think the retaliation with civil victims on the Palestinian side was good either.
Neither are the Russian people raping and mass-bombing Ukrainians.

I don’t understand this. You would give up smoking if everyone else would give up smoking as a consequence? But you don’t want everyone else to have to quit smoking, because that would be against their liberty, even though it would have the same effect? Am I missing something?

Also another argument I haven’t seen in this thread: smokers affect other people’s health if they smoke next to you, for example outside bars, entrances, public transport, etc. Those people’s liberty not to smoke is restricted every day. Sure they could complain every time someone smokes, but let’s be realistic, nobody does that.

I agree that planned obsolescence and quality loss is a real issue, but also you cannot always invest a lot of resources to make something last a lifetime.
If e.g. car or printer parts can be replaced with carbon fiber or something less resource intensive than metal. Or the material is cheaper, etc.

It's funny, I just noticed that you linked to the parent comment that I linked to, in your edit.

I guess if the focus for tildes remains on only extensive discussions and contact between all users, it might not be what I'm currently looking for. But maybe it should stay this way in order to not break the experience for those who enjoy tildes as it's now.

With @Deimos already having left reddit because it was going into a different direction than he liked, I'd fully understand if he wasn't going to listen to the people who want to change tildes' principles ;)

To be honest, I'm not sure if I understand you. You like the specific features of the AskHistorians community, so that would be something that you would like to reappear in a tildes community? On the other hand, you want all tildes communities to be similar?

I think, tildes' features, like labels instead of downvotes, and auto-collapsing previously read comments, influence the community in a good way, on a large scale. So I don't really see a danger in too many communities. Even though reddit is flawed in many ways, there were inspiring and friendly discussions in some communities.

I echo the desire for being able to participate in discussion around my local city (Vancouver, BC) without polluting the global postspace. But I also would be wary of going down the path of distinct subcommunities, as I worry it would be too fracturing for a space like this.

With "a space like this" do you mean its size being relatively small?

I think this is kind of a chicken-and-egg-problem. Sure, if there are too many small forums, it might be difficult to get the whole picture. But If there aren't many small communities, not a lot might be attracted to the website.

To me, this was probably the biggest strength of reddit: a niche for every interest, from which emerged an engaging mix of constantly interesting content.

I think his highest priority is to offer something that is more secure/private than the current market leaders.

And with that goal comes the necessity to move quickly. Tell me an alternative app that users can install on their iPhone and Android phones with a similar amount or growth rate of features as Signal.

He might think a little too high of himself, I don't know him personally, but ultimately he offers us a better, more private/secure, alternative than the current market leaders. Sure it's not the pinnacle and yeah you need to trust him (and his team) not to destroy the service. And you don't really have to trust him as you can reproducibly compile the app or in theory even fork the project and use your own servers.

But the important point here is that it is progress to the status quo and therefore I don't understand why you should not recommend it to the mainstream, i.e. people currently using Whatsapp, Telegram, Viber, etc.

That logic is flawed, as Apple's marketing for privacy, so data leaks hit them as hard as Google. One could also argue it's easier to find alternatives for Apple products than for Google's.

Google, on the other hand, is intentionally grabbing as much data as they can, but they do have a big motivation to protect that data, as targetting ads with that data is their main profit generator.

If Apple's data on you leaks, it's a bad PR story. If Google's data leaks, they've lost their business model because nobody has to go through Google anymore.
