I feel bad for Noel. It seems like he's caught in the trap of self-defeatism. It can be very hard to seize grip of your life and actually do something, if you're feeling like nothing will ever matter. And it's hard to fault other folks for not encouraging him, but at the same time - maybe one single person telling you you're worth it is all it takes.

I think sometimes (not always though) these "losers" are just people who have not found "their people". Finding the right community can really help people blossom.

The unfortunately reality is they may be in a situation (like a small community or a lack of economic opportunity) that keeps them from finding their people, or from making a fresh start. It's hard to turn over a new leaf when everyone you've ever known lives in your small then and knows you as the loser.

As an engineer, I often feel this when I'm with a group of executive or sales people. I can tell I am missing cues and subtext to the conversations, but I am at a loss for how to remedy it.

I try to remember this when I am not "the loser" and be extra kind. But you cannot fix people, just support them if they decide to change.

This hurts on a personal level. And not in the good way.

It's like he's got "enfeebled", a disabling stat debuff, cast on him. Everything he does takes a minus 19 modifier. I've been Noel, and I've been with Noel. Sometimes we can only save ourselves.

I have known people like that, people who wallow in their mediocrity. They can be hard to love. Ouch! This made me laugh!

    Ouch!

if u take anything i write as anything other than satire and character, then even god cannot help you.

I understand what you're saying. It's sometimes difficult to pinpoint what exactly makes one a loser. Others can be in similar situations due to circumstance, but not fall victim to being a loser. The people that climb out often end up stronger by enduring and learning.

I wouldn't say I know someone exactly like you're talking about, but at the same time I do. Just different circumstances, but the self wallowing and externalizing of problems is so recognizable that you could swap their lives and they'd act similarly.

Being a loser is what you make of it, not the circumstances you're in.

but none of these things are the reason why i or anyone would consider noel a fucking loser. i don’t think there’s anything linking living with your father to being a loser. nor your job status or education.

he’s a fucking loser because he thinks he is; and because he thinks he is, he acts like he is.

Very compelling intro up to and including the quote above. Unfortunately, I found the rest of the piece falls
flat. Incoherent perhaps? I'm not sure the precise word. Imo, the bottom half of the piece doesn't support the top half very well. Or perhaps it hasn't clicked for me.

Im sorry, but I gotta ask: is there a reason why you don't capitalize words?

That's okay but I must be honest with you: a lack in capitalization makes it extremely difficult for me to navigate sentences and comprehend text. This is probably made worse by my ADHD, but I think other people might have a similar perception. The result, to me, is that it makes reading difficult enough that I'm much less likely to read uncapitalized text. Paragraphs look like one giant sentence to me :/

Even the comment you just wrote is breaking my brain :(

Edit: Capitalization is essentially an accessibility feature for me, and the rise of non capitalized sentences is a bit worrisome.

        Just my 2 cents.

EDIT: @mycketforvirrad, I would like to suggest the addition of the tag "uncapitalized text" for such posts, so that people who have accessibility issues can filter these posts out, preventing the author from being barraged by annoying complaints due to their artistic choice.

It’s the second post from you that I’ve come across today, and i didn’t want to mention it before, but now I’m going to join in: it is very off putting for me. So much so, that I stopped reading after the first couple of sentences of both posts.

It’s too much of a “look at me, I’m being so very different” for me to read past. I don’t really get the argument of “I just want to write, using capitals would interrupt too much” because writing like you do would take me a lot more effort. Most text editors take care of it without any effort from you.

I get it. It's like a style, it's poetic. It's how I type on the keyboard when I'm being casual. On mobile, my grammar is "proper" because it's automatic.

I didn't even notice the lack of capitalisation or grammar, probably too busy enjoying the content. I'm normally a bit, and I meant a bit, OCD but this definitely didn't trigger it.

You can ask an LLM, like ChatGPT, to capitalize the text for you.

My apologies to the author, but a text that requires me to paste its contents to GPT is almost certainly a text I'm not reading. There is just way too much content for anyone to read nowadays, and most of them do not require using an LLM. If this vexing trend keeps growing, hopefully, there will be a Firefox addon that easily makes text readable and accessible for me.
