I'm really conscious about climate change and try to limit my impact on the environment (going by bike or using public transport whenever I can, not using plastic bags, saving electricity, etc.). However the last few months I've been taking some time off to travel and it was often really convenient (sometimes basically necessary) to take a flight.
I know how bad flying is, but it seems really difficult to get to know different places without it. Right now I think I'll just stay close to home for a while but I still haven't found a solution to this dilemma.

Not really one book, but the "Essential Knowledge" series by MIT Press is really recommendable. There are books about a variety of topics and for me it strikes a great balance between being understandable for someone without any knowledge in the area, but still not simplifying too much.
PS: I got a bunch of them really cheap on humble bundle, so look out for deals!

I'm gonna have to buy a new smartphone soon, but I want to be able to keep that as long as possible. From my viewpoint, there are mainly three aspects to that: performance, software and battery lifespan/replaceability.
Do you have any recommendations (what I was originally hoping for - but didn't find - is a mid to high range phone with a maintained lineageos build and a replaceable battery)? And what are your ways to handle the problem of the user experience on smartphones degrading so quickly?

Youtube has a giant lead in the online video streaming market and in spite of many controversies (demonetization, click bait being promoted to peoples' front pages, etc.) there doesn't seem to be any indication that this is going to change. What do you think about the future of this industry? Which (if any) providers have a chance to become viable competitors to YouTube?

Your link is definitely a great resource to get started protecting your privacy. And regarding the VPN, depending on the country you live in, it can certainly improve your privacy by a lot. For a US citizen, for example, it is a really good way to effectively put yourself under the privacy laws of another country with stricter regulation and privacy protection.

I'd agree that it's really important to be conscious about privacy. However:

    • Not everyone has to make privacy their number one priority. There's a lot of tradeoffs you have to make to really achieve it and some people aren't willing to make them, which is fine (as long as they consciously and knowingly do it)
    • A VPN is not sufficient and not even always necessary for privacy. You basically replace the need to trust your local network and ISP with the need to trust your VPN provider. Also there are a lot of things (like what services you use, cookies, etc) that arguably impact privacy equally or even more.

I'm learning Spanish and feel like reading is really helping me get to the next level. I've read 1984 and one part of Harry Potter in Spanish but now I'm thinking of trying some original, non-translated literature.

What Spanish-language books would you recommend (that are not too difficult to read)?
