Comment on Donald Glover as Willy Wonka? Fictional characters' changing races in ~movies
acosmichippo which character, the kid? haven't read the books, they're on my list. The Dark Tower books have major plot points that revolve around racial tensions, so switching the race of the main character basically required massive cuts and rewrites to the plot.
which character, the kid? haven't read the books, they're on my list.

Comment on I don't like fate because I am not in control of my life in ~talk
acosmichippo i look at it exactly the opposite. Just because some particles are non-deterministic doesn’t mean they affect our decisions. even if non-deterministic particles do affect our decisions, then that...If free will is the ability to take an action without outside influence, and we are made of tiny particles with non-deterministic factors, isn't the randomness basically free will?

even if non-deterministic particles do affect our decisions, then that isn’t something that we chose to happen. We are still products of the laws of physics, even if they aren’t predetermined.

acosmichippo Just because quantum CPUs may lead to unpredictability doesn't mean we have free will. Assuming for the sake of argument that this is true, our consciousness operates on the physics of those CPUs,......there has been some research indicating that consciousness is derived from tiny quantum cpus in the brain. If there are quantum cpus in the brain affecting our perception of reality, our mode of being, our consciousness, and if causality is a bit iffy on that level, then pure determinism seems less credible than it does for the macro world.
Just because quantum CPUs may lead to unpredictability doesn't mean we have free will. Assuming for the sake of argument that this is true, our consciousness operates on the physics of those CPUs, not vice-versa.
In other words, if one of my quantum CPUs causes me to take a drink of water as opposed to not taking a drink of water, how much agency in that decision did I really have?

Comment on will we see a ~politics? in ~tildes
acosmichippo You're pretty much arguing for false balance. If a group is "centrist" by nature, it should be self-evident that they'll be heavily critical of far-right people like Trump and McConnell....How is that centralist?

Personally, I would actually agree with you that /r/politics is left leaning and not hard centrist. Not because of the articles they upvote, just my impression of people's policy preferences from comments.

Comment on Red Dead Redemption 2 - Special, ultimate, collectors edition and preorder info in ~games
acosmichippo I expected bonus gear like every other special edition. Usually by halfway through the game that gear is worthless anyway, so I just buy the base game. But this bonus mission is actual gameplay...Special Edition delivers exclusive content for Story Mode including:
Bank Robbery Mission and Gang Hideout in Story Mode: Get exclusive access to a Bank Robbery Mission, in which Arthur and a couple of his fellow gang members come up with a daring plan to break in and rob the bank in the southern town of Rhodes. Elsewhere, the Del Lobos Gang has taken over a hacienda - clear this gang’s hideout and rob their stash for a lucrative take.
I expected bonus gear like every other special edition. Usually by halfway through the game that gear is worthless anyway, so I just buy the base game.
But this bonus mission is actual gameplay behind an additional paywall now. fuck that, I'm boycotting until all the content is available for the base price.

Skeptics Guide to the Universe (general science literacy)
538 politics - I assume most people know of this, but I didn't see it mentioned yet.
Vox's The Weeds - pretty left-leaning. they do a great job of explaining public policy issues, with some politics thrown in.
Democracy Now - (far) left-leaning daily news
These are the aging games I'm hoping will finally be discounted a significant amount:
NieR Automata
Prey
Rise of the Tomb Raider
South Park Fractured But Whole
Wolfenstien 2
XCOM 2
