It is one thing to hear someone describe being pinned down and smothered and another to viscerally see that in an image - especially happening to our symbol of freedom and justice. Secondly, this situation is not black and white. It's tough because I believe Dr. Ford, 100%, but I also know she has no corroborating evidence and the one witness she does have is unreliable and politically motivated (he works for conservative magazines and has a history of misogynistic behavior) to deny her story. Kavanaugh has presumably lied under oath but we don't really have any way to prove this. That's what really gets me - we can't really go off of anything besides he said she said which is really unfortunate and it does seem vaguely not ok to end somebody's career over he said she said, even if I may think it's justified. I know this isn't criminal court or anything, but it seems like an impossible scenario for the senators who actually have a conscience (aka Collins, murkowski, and az senator flake? is that it?). I honestly feel bad for them and immensely for Dr. Ford for having to go through this for it all to potentially mean nothing. :(

I love having coffee in the morning, it is a small joy that I look forward to every morning. It's small but it's one of the only things in my week that's really consistent.

Good for him for sharing his perspective - especially since men are so stigmatized for being emotional.

Comment on The Existential Void of the Pop-Up ‘Experience’ in ~life

Isn't that the point of art? Does that make art less meaningful? I dunno, it seems to have logical implications that I'm not a fan of. I don't see anything inherently wrong with sharing positive feelings you have with others. We exist as social creatures who need each other. No man is an island and all that. As a counterpoint, I really enjoy hiking by myself sometimes because I can be with my thoughts in nature and sometimes that's really enjoyable to me. So I'm not saying we can't experience things solitarily. Just that sharing something doesn't devalue it or make it less 'pure'.

I think this is leaning more towards a critique on social media than a critique of these places. It's clear that you feel some contempt for people who feel driven to share photos of themselves or curate a narrative of their lives through social media. I definitely agree there is a conversation to be had about why we enjoy this or what social capital is gets us. But I think, honestly, that you're overgeneralizing people who go to these things. I guess as someone who would totally go to the ice cream museum and post about it on Instagram (though I'd be less likely to pay $45 if there wasn't something actually thought provoking involved) I feel a little attacked, haha. I don't think I'm doing it out if some vacuous urge to make others jealous - though I acknowledge that we can't always be aware of the root cause of every motivation we have. I just like aesthetics and photography, and it's fun to share that stuff and have other people express that they like it as well.

I think it pigeonholes his videos into leftist reactionary territory when I actually think his videos span a lot of other topics and would reach a wider audience if he had a more 'neutral' name.

To go into a museum of ice cream, for example, where you see things that engender feelings of whimsy, of magical realism, that you wouldn't see in your everyday reality, is fun. It makes you feel different. Taking photos of yourself or your friends in this altered reality can be fun. It is kind of like why people like to go to contemporary art museums.
I definitely think that the critique based on charging exorbitant amounts of money for people to get in or creating half-assed versions of this because people know it will get likes or drive business is a criqitue more of capitalism than of the idea that ice cream museums or other things of that nature are trying to communicate. That's my opinion anyways. -

I recognize that conversation around cultural appropriation is messy and inexact most of the time, but I thought this video was really well researched and presented.

Overpopulation just happens to be something people on environmentally conscious circles talk about frequently maybe without knowing it's more unsavory past, and that's why I wanted to share this video.

I want to be clear that I'm not totally endorsing everything Peter Coffin says in this video and I definitely think there are discussions to be had on overpopulation and resource usage, but I just thought it would be an interesting perspective to share.

Making the conversation about how silly you find religion or the negative ways it has impacted your life is just as off topic as making the conversation about the good things religion does for people.

So while bullying and harrassment are taken seriously in workplaces involving primarily adults - I would argue it is as well in schools, it's just harder to change and prevent.

I am partially glad that he is stepping down and opening the position to fresh faces - he was up for election in November anyways and I was prepared to vote against him but this definitely changes the dynamic of the race and I'll be interested to see who runs. My district is a red one in a sea of blue in SoCal so it should be interesting!
Yeah - that's true. It's possible I'm falling for the rhetoric a little bit hearing everyone constantly say 'his life will be ruined'. When you put it that way, though, I think you'd have a point that I'm equivocating her burden and his which isnt very cool on my part considering one is a perpetrator and the other not.
